John Oliver is officially heading to Salem. A new promo for Days of Our Lives gives fans their first glimpse of the comedian in character ahead of his long-awaited debut on August 11, but the soap is keeping one major detail under wraps: who exactly is he playing?

The promo features several ongoing Salem storylines before revealing Oliver’s mysterious character. Sporting a dark wig that is clearly a dramatic departure from his usual look, he walks into Mayor Paulina Price’s office and asks, “Mayor Paulina Price?” She confirms her identity, but the brief exchange offers little clue about what brings him to Salem.

Oliver’s guest appearance comes after he publicly expressed his desire to join a soap opera. On Last Week Tonight, he jokingly offered himself to the genre after seeing ESPN analyst Stephen A. Smith land a recurring role on General Hospital. Oliver eventually got his wish, appearing as the mysterious Z on General Hospital earlier this year.

Now he’s making the jump to Days of Our Lives, where his “short story arc” will air across three episodes on August 11, 12 and 14. Executive producer Ken Corday previously said the show had to answer Oliver’s call after he declared that he wanted to be part of the soap opera world.

Oliver’s Days co-stars have also praised his performance. Dan Feuerriegel called working with him “a lot of fun,” while Maggie Carney noted that Oliver is quick on his feet and enjoys improvising within the boundaries of the scene.

For now, however, the identity and motives of Oliver’s character remain a mystery. With Salem known for its unexpected twists, fans may have to tune in to find out exactly what brings the comedian’s newest character into Paulina’s world.
