Television viewers have plenty to enjoy this weekend as several popular series return with new seasons, while one beloved mystery drama says goodbye after more than a decade. From action-packed spy thrillers to fantasy adventures and classic Hollywood films, the weekend offers something for every audience.
After 11 successful seasons, Grantchester concludes its long run on PBS. The British mystery drama follows crime-solving vicar Alphy Kottaram, played by Rishi Nair, as he faces one of the most emotional cases of his life. His close friend, Detective Inspector Geordie Keating, portrayed by Robson Green, is fighting for his life in hospital after being shot. While police search for the gunman, Alphy struggles with questions of faith and forgiveness. Despite the tense storyline, the series finale remains true to the show’s warm-hearted message about friendship, community, and the importance of chosen family.
Meanwhile, Paramount+ welcomes back Taylor Sheridan’s acclaimed spy thriller Lioness for its third season. Academy Award winner Zoe Saldaña returns as CIA team leader Joe, whose latest mission takes her team to war-torn Ukraine. The opening episode explores modern warfare, combining advanced drone technology with traditional trench combat. However, the new season also promises to become more personal as Joe finds it increasingly difficult to separate her dangerous career from her family life.
Fantasy fans can also look forward to the return of The Librarians: The Next Chapter on TNT. The spin-off series begins its second season with a special guest appearance from Lost star Dominic Monaghan, who portrays the legendary wizard Merlin. The Librarians travel to an international boarding school to investigate a mysterious outbreak of violent rage. As they work alongside Merlin, they must decide whether the ancient magician can truly be trusted.
Classic movie lovers are also in for a treat as Turner Classic Movies launches its annual Summer Under the Stars celebration. Throughout August, each day is dedicated to a different Hollywood legend with a full 24-hour lineup of their greatest films. The event begins by honoring actress and singer Doris Day with beloved musicals, romantic comedies, and thrillers, including Romance on the High Seas, Lover Come Back, Midnight Lace, and Alfred Hitchcock’s The Man Who Knew Too Much. The following day pays tribute to legendary actor Humphrey Bogart.
Reality television also receives a fresh twist with the premiere of Naked and Afraid: Shipwrecked on Discovery Channel. Twelve experienced survivalists are unexpectedly stranded on a remote Philippine island after being set adrift overnight. Divided into four teams, they must battle harsh conditions, dangerous marine wildlife, and limited resources while searching for pieces of a rescue map that could lead them to safety after 35 days.
Other weekend highlights include the penultimate episode of House of the Dragon on HBO, the season finale of the PBS mystery series Patience, the return of CNN’s sports documentary Decades in Sports, and new episodes of The Walking Dead: Dead City and The Westies.
With emotional finales, exciting premieres, and classic cinema celebrations, this weekend’s television schedule offers viewers an impressive variety of entertainment across multiple genres.
