Actress Gayle Rankin welcomes that reaction, saying she enjoys portraying a woman whose intuition, mystery, and power challenge audience expectations. Rather than shying away from the controversy surrounding Alys, Rankin believes it reflects how viewers often respond to female characters who refuse to fit into simple categories.
Throughout the season, Alys has developed an increasingly complex relationship with Aemond Targaryen, played by Ewan Mitchell. While many fans have questioned whether her feelings are genuine or simply part of a calculated plan, Rankin insists the answer is far more complicated. According to the actress, Alys is manipulating Aemond, but that does not mean her emotions are fake. “Two things can be true at the same time,” she explained, emphasizing that the relationship was intentionally written and performed with emotional ambiguity.
Rankin revealed that she and Mitchell worked closely to ensure the connection between their characters felt authentic despite its darker undertones. Rankin believes Alys recognizes danger long before anyone else does, describing her final “idiot” remark as the frustration of someone whose warnings have been completely ignored.
The actress also addressed one of the defining aspects of Alys’ character: her supernatural intuition. While the series presents Alys as a mysterious witch, Rankin sees her abilities as a larger metaphor for female instinct and perception. She said she feels honored to portray a woman whose intuition unsettles people, arguing that audiences often dismiss female power by labeling it as manipulation, danger, or deceit. For Rankin, the character represents something much deeper than magic alone.
