Starz’s new boxing crime drama Fightland has kicked off with an emotional and violent premiere that sets the stage for a gripping revenge story. Starring Howard Charles as former heavyweight boxing champion Duke Kilroy, the series follows a man determined to destroy the powerful crime boss who shattered his life.

The opening episode delivers a devastating blow when Duke’s brother, Calvin, is murdered. Speaking about the heartbreaking scene, Howard Charles revealed that it was one of the most important moments of the entire production.
“I knew that would be a really important scene for me personally,” Charles explained. “That moment becomes the core of Duke’s character. Revenge gives him purpose, but it’s also the thing that threatens to consume him.”

After witnessing his brother’s death, Duke chases down the killer and beats him to death in a fit of rage. The violent act results in an eight-year prison sentence in the United States. When he is finally released, Duke returns to London with only one goal in mind: revenge against boxing promoter and cartel leader Kingsley Marshall, played by Nicholas Pinnock, whom he believes orchestrated the murder and framed him.
However, Duke’s return home is far from welcoming. His father, Gary “Gazzer” Kilroy, refuses to treat him like family. Richard Pepple, who portrays Gazzer, explained that years of emotional wounds have destroyed their relationship.
“Gazzer has cut him off,” Pepple said. “As far as he’s concerned, Duke is just a visitor. That’s not only because of recent events, but also because of things that happened long before. Calling him a visitor is Gazzer’s way of protecting himself.”
Meanwhile, Kingsley Marshall remains mysteriously absent throughout much of the premiere. According to Nicholas Pinnock, the disappearance is no accident. He described Kingsley as a man who mastered the criminal world after realizing boxing was deeply connected to organized crime.
“When he entered boxing, he didn’t expect to find such a dangerous underworld,” Pinnock explained. “Once he accepted that reality, he decided he had to become better than everyone else if he wanted to survive.”
To lure Kingsley out of hiding, Duke launches an attack on the Marshall crime empire by stealing millions of dollars’ worth of drugs. The theft immediately throws Kingsley’s children, Cece and Zeek, into crisis as they struggle to maintain control of the family’s criminal organization.
Charles Babalola, who plays Zeek, said the siblings face enormous pressure despite their young age.
“They’re running a crime family without their father,” Babalola said. “Reputation means everything in their world. If people think they’re weak, they’ll lose everything. They know they have to make a statement and recover what was stolen.”
The premiere establishes Fightland as more than just a boxing drama. Combining family conflict, organized crime, and psychological trauma, the series explores how grief and revenge can shape a person’s identity. Duke’s determination to avenge his brother may give him a reason to keep fighting, but it also threatens to consume everything he has left.
New episodes of Fightland air every Friday on Starz.
