Bruce Campbell has shared a difficult new update about his health, revealing that he has been given an estimated five-year prognosis as he continues his battle with cancer.
The 68-year-old actor and filmmaker, best known to generations of fans as Ash Williams in the Evil Dead franchise, discussed his diagnosis during a recent appearance on The Adam Carolla Show. Campbell first revealed his cancer diagnosis in March, describing the illness as treatable but not curable, while choosing not to disclose the specific type of cancer.

Campbell Reveals His Estimated Prognosis
During the September 2 episode of The Adam Carolla Show, Campbell spoke about his health while promoting his independent film Ernie & Emma, a project in which he stars and also serves as writer, director and producer.
The timing of the film has taken on a particularly personal meaning for Campbell. Ernie & Emma centers on a man spreading the ashes of his late wife, a story Campbell acknowledged now carries a deeper connection to his own circumstances.
Speaking about his diagnosis, Campbell said that his current prognosis is approximately five years. When host Adam Carolla asked directly whether doctors had told him he had five years to live, Campbell replied that the estimate was “give or take.”
Campbell has not publicly shared the specific type of cancer he is living with.
A Diagnosis That Changed His Professional Plans
Campbell first announced his cancer diagnosis in March, telling fans that he had been diagnosed with a form of cancer that was “treatable” but not “curable.”
The news came as a shock to the actor himself, and he explained at the time that treatment would require him to make changes to his professional schedule.
Campbell said that public appearances, fan conventions and work commitments would need to take a back seat as he focused on treatment. Several convention appearances were subsequently canceled as he adjusted his schedule around his health.
Despite the challenges ahead, Campbell made clear that he did not want sympathy and hoped to prevent misinformation by sharing the news himself. He also reassured fans that he had strong support around him and remained determined to continue moving forward.
Continuing to Create Through a Difficult Time

Even as he navigates treatment, Campbell has continued to focus on his creative work.
His latest project, Ernie & Emma, represents a significant personal undertaking, with Campbell taking on multiple roles both in front of and behind the camera. The independent film gave him another opportunity to work as an actor, writer, director and producer at a time when his own health has added new meaning to the story he is telling.
Campbell has long been one of the most recognizable figures in cult horror. He co-produced and starred as Ash Williams in The Evil Dead (1981), before returning for Evil Dead 2 in 1987 and Army of Darkness in 1992.
He later reprised the role in the television series Ash vs Evil Dead, which ran from 2015 to 2018. Campbell has also remained closely connected to the franchise behind the scenes, serving as a producer on the 2013 Evil Dead and as an executive producer on Evil Dead Rise in 2023.
Beyond the horror series that made him a cult icon, Campbell has also lent his voice to animated films including Cars 2, Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs and The Ant Bully.
As Campbell continues treatment, his latest update offers a sobering look at the reality of his diagnosis. Still, the actor and filmmaker remains focused on his work and the projects that continue to matter to him as he moves forward.
