Duane “Keffe D” Davis Found Guilty in 1996 Murder of Tupac Shakur

Nearly three decades after Tupac Shakur was fatally shot in Las Vegas, the long-running murder case has finally reached a verdict.

On Monday, August 31, 2026, a Nevada jury found Duane “Keffe D” Davis guilty of first-degree murder with the use of a deadly weapon in connection with Shakur’s 1996 killing. Davis, 63, could face life in prison and had pleaded not guilty. The jury reached its decision in less than three hours after the conclusion of the trial.

The conviction marks the first in a case that has remained one of the most closely watched unsolved murders in music history. Davis was the only person ever charged in connection with Shakur’s death.

Importantly, prosecutors did not claim that Davis personally fired the fatal shots. Instead, they argued that he helped organize and carry out the attack, which is sufficient for a murder conviction under Nevada law.

Why prosecutors said Davis was responsible

The prosecution’s case centered heavily on Davis’ own statements over the years.

Chief Deputy District Attorney Binu Palal argued that Davis and his associates went after Shakur and Death Row Records co-founder Marion “Suge” Knight following a confrontation earlier that night involving Davis’ nephew, Orlando “Baby Lane” Anderson.

According to prosecutors, Davis obtained the gun and helped coordinate the retaliatory attack. The group later spotted Shakur and Knight in a BMW near the Las Vegas Strip before making a U-turn and approaching them in a white Cadillac.

Palal told jurors that Davis’ accounts of the shooting had changed in certain details over the years, but one central point remained consistent: Davis repeatedly acknowledged that he was inside the Cadillac from which the shots were fired.

The prosecution also relied on Davis’ 2019 memoir, Compton Street Legend, along with interviews and other public statements in which he discussed his involvement.

Prosecutors argued that although Davis never identified himself as the gunman, his role in organizing the attack made him criminally responsible for the killing.

What happened to Tupac Shakur?

Shakur was shot on September 7, 1996, while riding in a BMW driven by Knight near the Las Vegas Strip.

A white Cadillac pulled alongside the vehicle and gunfire erupted. Shakur was struck multiple times, while Knight suffered minor injuries.

The rapper was taken to a hospital but died six days later, on September 13, at the age of 25.

For years, no one was charged in connection with the killing. The investigation eventually gained new momentum as Davis began publicly discussing his alleged involvement and authorities revisited statements and evidence connected to the case.

Davis was arrested and charged in 2023, becoming the only person ever formally prosecuted for Shakur’s murder. He is also the only surviving person among the four men prosecutors say were inside the Cadillac during the shooting.

The defense challenged the evidence

Davis’ defense team argued that the prosecution had failed to provide independent evidence placing him inside the Cadillac or even in Las Vegas on the night of September 7, 1996.

Defense attorney Michael Sanft emphasized the absence of surveillance footage, phone records and other physical evidence that could directly establish Davis’ presence at the scene.

The defense also argued that Davis had exaggerated or fabricated parts of his story over the years, potentially motivated by money and publicity.

Prosecutors countered that Davis’ repeated admissions were significant evidence and maintained that changes in peripheral details did not erase the central elements of his account.

The case was also complicated by its age. Nearly 30 years had passed since Shakur’s death, meaning much of the available evidence dated back to the 1990s, when investigators did not have many of the surveillance and digital records that are routinely collected today.

Over nine days of testimony, jurors heard from 24 prosecution witnesses and three defense witnesses. The 16-member panel, including four alternates, ultimately reached its verdict after less than three hours of deliberation.

A long-awaited verdict

The guilty verdict brings a significant development to one of hip-hop’s most enduring mysteries.

Shakur’s death has remained a defining moment in music history, while questions surrounding the shooting have continued to fuel documentaries, books and investigations for decades.

For prosecutors, the case was ultimately about Davis’ role in organizing the attack rather than proving that he was the person who pulled the trigger.

For the defense, the central question remained whether Davis’ own words could establish his guilt without independent evidence placing him at the scene.

The jury ultimately sided with the prosecution.

Davis now faces the possibility of a life sentence, bringing the decades-old case to a dramatic turning point while leaving Shakur’s legacy as influential as ever.
