HBO’s acclaimed historical drama The Gilded Age is nearing the end of filming for its fourth season, and fans are already getting an exciting preview through behind-the-scenes photos shared by the cast on social media. The images not only showcase the returning stars back in costume but also reveal several new characters who will join the series when Season 4 premieres this fall.
According to HBO, Season 4 will continue exploring the changing social landscape of late 19th-century New York. After successfully reshaping high society in Season 3, Bertha Russell, played by Carrie Coon, must now face the consequences of her ambitions. At the same time, Agnes van Rhijn, portrayed by Christine Baranski, sees an opportunity to restore her influence in society. Marian Brook, played by Louisa Jacobson, begins forging her own future, while Peggy Scott, portrayed by Denée Benton, struggles to gain acceptance from her future in-laws.
The behind-the-scenes photos reveal a lively atmosphere on set. Denée Benton shared a welcome-back poster marking the start of production, while Audra McDonald posted fun photos of herself relaxing between scenes and joking about her elaborate period costumes. Cynthia Nixon also delighted fans by sharing images of herself in costume as Ada Brook, including one where Carrie Coon helped with her makeup.
Louisa Jacobson posted one of the largest collections of production photos, featuring both returning cast members and several newcomers. Among them is actor James Scully, who joins the series as Lee Klein, a young artist whose career begins after selling his first painting at a memorable society event. The character also serves as an apprentice to renowned American painter William Merritt Chase.
Jacobson’s photos also hinted at the arrival of several important historical figures. Fake facial hair prepared for William Merritt Chase, financier J.P. Morgan, and business magnate John D. Rockefeller could be seen backstage. While the actor portraying Chase has not yet been revealed, Bill Camp will play J.P. Morgan, and Neal Huff has been cast as Rockefeller.
Another new addition is Maggie Kuntz, who portrays Fiona Summers, a cousin of the influential Astor family. Described as an independent and adventurous young woman, Fiona is expected to challenge the strict social conventions of the era despite coming from one of New York’s most respected families.
Historical events continue to play a major role in the series. Photos from filming in Lower Manhattan earlier this year suggest that the arrival of the Statue of Liberty may become one of Season 4’s biggest storylines, further connecting the fictional drama to real events in American history.
The cast also celebrated the show’s continued success after receiving eight Emmy nominations for Season 3. HBO shared a video of the cast and crew reacting joyfully to the announcement while filming the new season.
