The brand-new Judges’ Callback Round kicked off on the August 4 episode of America’s Got Talent, with Simon Cowell and Mel B. inviting their selected acts to perform one more time for a chance to earn a place in the Live Shows.
Following the Audition rounds, 10 Golden Buzzers and 18 judges’ picks had already secured spots in the Live Shows, leaving just 16 places available. From the 23 acts chosen for the Callback Round, only 16 would advance, meaning seven contestants would be eliminated before the Quarterfinals.
To help make the difficult decisions, Mel B. was joined by fellow Spice Girl Emma Bunton, while Simon Cowell enlisted Normani and songwriter-producer Poo Bear as guest advisors.
Mel B.’s first callback act was comedian Lachlan Patterson. Recognizing that comedy works best with a live audience, Mel hosted his performance at her local pub instead of her home. Although Lachlan admitted afterward that he felt some of his jokes didn’t fully land, he remained hopeful despite lingering self-doubt.
Next up was country singing duo Butter & Grit, who chose to reveal a more emotional side by performing a heartfelt song about their friendship. Emma Bunton was visibly moved by the performance, praising the pair for blending their very different voices so naturally.
Magician Joel M. then delivered one of the evening’s most impressive acts. After recently leaving his role as a television presenter to pursue magic full-time, Joel stunned Mel and Emma by making one of Emma’s rings disappear before revealing it inside a walnut hidden within an egg inside a lemon. To make matters even more astonishing, “walnut” turned out to be the random word Emma’s phone generated after searching “AGT.”
Young singing duo Madelyn and Malachi returned with a performance of Shut Up and Dance. Although Mel had suggested they prepare backup songs, the pair ultimately trusted their original choice and performed their own unique version. Mel appreciated the risk they took but felt Madelyn could have showcased more of her distinctive Dolly Parton-inspired vocal style.
Mentalist duo James and Marina elevated their act even further than their audition. After asking Mel to secretly collect personal household items the night before, Marina successfully identified each one from a distance. They then amazed everyone again when Emma correctly guessed the identity of a person in a randomly selected Polaroid photograph after participating in their mind-reading demonstration. Both Mel and Emma admitted they were left completely speechless.
The final performer in Mel’s group was Bety, the youngest contestant among her callback acts. She delivered an emotional bilingual performance of Impossible, earning praise from Emma for her heartfelt connection to the song. Mel acknowledged that choosing only a few acts from such a diverse group would be extremely difficult.
Simon Cowell’s callbacks began with viral dancer Sando, who expanded his performance by incorporating additional dancers and drones after Simon encouraged him to think bigger than his audition. Both Normani and Poo Bear believed the act had significant potential if scaled up even further.
Singer Travis Garland, known for performing on Dancing With the Stars, returned hoping to show a more authentic side of himself. Performing Rihanna’s Love on the Brain, Travis impressed Simon with his vocals, although Normani and Poo Bear felt the performance was technically excellent but lacked deeper emotional connection.
Teen singing duo Nyjah Music and Zyah Rhythm initially struggled with confidence while performing Justin Bieber’s Daisies. Simon even stopped them midway through the song, encouraging them to restart with greater stage presence. Their second attempt was dramatically stronger, convincing the judges they possessed tremendous long-term potential.
Dance group Elektrodads, made up of longtime friends and fathers, embraced their family image by performing with dolls strapped to their chests. Simon praised the routine as clever, funny, and highly creative, although the fierce competition made advancement difficult.
Comedian Akira, famous for performing without clothes, returned with another unconventional routine after Simon encouraged him to reveal more of his personality beyond the gimmick. Normani admitted she had never seen anything like his act, while Simon praised his originality and thanked him for bringing something completely unique to the competition.

The final callback performer was singer Elsie. Simon believed her audition had been technically polished but emotionally distant. Returning with Ed Sheeran’s Make It Rain, Elsie successfully connected with the audience in a much more personal way, earning enthusiastic praise from Simon for her noticeable improvement.
At the end of the episode, Mel B. selected James and Marina, Bety, and Butter & Grit to advance to the Live Shows. Simon Cowell chose Travis Garland, Sando, Akira, Nyjah Music & Zyah Rhythm, and Elsie to continue in the competition, despite admitting he remained slightly concerned about Nyjah and Zyah’s inexperience.
The contestants eliminated by Mel B. were Madelyn and Malachi, Joel M., and Lachlan Patterson. Mel explained that Madelyn and Malachi needed more experience, Joel’s magic still required refinement, and Lachlan needed to develop greater confidence in himself.
Simon Cowell’s only elimination was Elektrodads. Although he praised the group’s creativity, he encouraged them to continue improving and return in a future season even stronger.
Next week, Howie Mandel’s six callback acts and Sofía Vergara’s five callback acts will compete for the remaining eight spots in the Quarterfinals, with three more contestants set to be eliminated before the Live Shows officially begin.
