You Won’t Believe What the Cast of The Handmaid’s Tale Looks Like Off-Screen and Aunt Lydia Isn’t Scary At All

Aunt Lydia isn’t so scary after all.

handmaids tale cast

Season 3 of The Handmaid’s Tale premieres June 5 on Hulu, so get pumped. As the show welcomes new faces and story lines that go beyond Margaret Atwood’s 1985 dystopian classic, here’s a peek at what some of the characters look like in and out of Gilead. (Season 1 and 2 spoilers, ahead.)

1. Offred/June (Elisabeth Moss)

handmaids tale cast

The role of Offred/June Osborne earned Elisabeth Moss several awards following season 1, including the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Television Series Drama and the Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. In season 2, Elisabeth told TV Insider that finding the real meaning of freedom is a large part of June’s story. “Maybe you have to find it in unexpected ways. What is the resistance? Perhaps it’s not what you thought it would be. Sometimes, rather than run away from something, you have to change it from the inside.”

2. Ofglen/Ofsteven/Emily (Alexis Bledel)

handmaids tale cast

To the delight of Alexis Bledel fans, Emily’s story is far from over. Season 2’s powerful second episode, “Unwomen,” found Alexis’s character in the Colonies, radioactive wastelands where women literally go to perish. Die-hard Gilmore Girls fans definitely won’t find Luke’s or the comfort of Lorelai or Emily Gilmore here. If you’ve ever wanted to imagine what the opposite of Stars Hollow is, the Colonies are a safe bet.

3. Moira (Samira Wiley)

handmaid's tale cast

Not long after her work on Orange Is the New Black ended, Samira Wiley took on the role of Moira, June’s BFF who successfully escapes Gilead and makes it to Canada, where she’s reunited with June’s husband, Luke. “In Toronto, Canada, where she’s escaped, we’ll see not only the strong Moira that we’ve become so used to but also a person who is trying to acclimate to this new world,” Samira told the Huffington Post ahead of season 2. “She goes through different struggles in Canada, and I think it’s very important and interesting to explore all of those sides of this woman.”

4. Ofwarren/Janine (Madeline Brewer)

handmaids tale cast

Madeline Brewer also made the journey from Litchfield to Gilead to portray Janine, a character who’s suffered a myriad of tragedies: She lost an eye, she had a baby but gave her child to the Putnams as per Gilead rules, she was on the verge of getting stoned by her fellow Handmaids, and she went to the Colonies. Bleak.

5. Aunt Lydia (Ann Dowd)

handmaids tale cast

For more than three decades, Ann Dowd has graced audiences with her talents onstage, in TV, and in movies. Her vast résumé includes Law & OrderThe X-FilesNYPD BlueThe Leftovers, and films like The Manchurian CandidateCaptain Fantastic, and Collateral Beauty. Following season 1 of The Handmaid’s Tale, Ann won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for playing Aunt Lydia. “Well, I think this is a dream,” she said in her acceptance speech. “I know it’s an actor’s dream and I’m deeply grateful to you. I don’t have the words, so I thank you.”

6. Nick (Max Minghella)

handmaids tale cast

Max Minghella, son of the late director Anthony Minghella, has appeared in films like The Social Network and The Internship and episodes of The Mindy Project playing Danny Castellano’s brother, Richie. In a 2017 Interview feature, Max said his decision to join The Handmaid’s Tale had a lot to do with the female-centric cast. “I find women more interesting to watch on a lot of levels, and I like the idea of being involved with something I would watch.”

7. Serena Waterford (Yvonne Strahovski)

handmaids tale cast

Before The Handmaid’s Tale, Yvonne Strahovski had small roles in movies like The Guilt Trip (with Seth Rogen) and All I See Is You (with Blake Lively). On the TV front, the Australian actress appeared in more than 90 episodes of the NBC series Chuck and, later, two seasons of Dexter. In an interview with Cosmopolitan.com, Yvonne opened up about how she read Serena’s emotions on the Hulu series. “I think the anger is coming from an unidentified regret, a regret that hasn’t been realized into consciousness. I think it comes from the fact that she feels stripped of her identity, ironically from her femininity as well, despite what she was rooting for to begin with.”

8. Commander Waterford (Joseph Fiennes)

handmaids tale cast

Joseph Fiennes entered Gilead as a seasoned stage, movie, and TV actor, appearing in notable films like Elizabeth and Shakespeare in Love and the second season of American Horror Story (he played Monsignor Timothy Howard in Asylum!).

9. Rita (Amanda Brugel)

handmaids tale cast

Before taking the lead Martha role on The Handmaid’s Tale, Amanda Brugel, who hails from Canada, appeared on episodes of NikitaOrphan Black, and the CBC sitcom Kim’s Convenience. “It has been such a part of my DNA,” Amanda told Hello! of bringing Margaret Atwood’s story to life. “She’s such a brilliant writer and has a brilliant mind. She doesn’t know it, but she’s my best friend!”

10. Luke (O-T Fagbenle)

handmaids tale cast

June’s husband is played by London-born actor O-T Fagbenle, who’s no stranger to picking up and moving to a totally different country. In an interview with RadioTimes, O-T revealed that he and his family have lived everywhere from Nigeria to Canada to Spain. “We had a map and we started choosing our favorite places,” he said.

11. Erin (Erin Way)

handmaids tale cast

Erin Way made her Handmaid’s Tale debut on season 1 as Erin, a former Handmaid who is fleeing to Canada and has stopped talking in wake of the trauma. We meet Erin when Luke gets picked up by a resistance group bound for Canada—however, only she and Luke actually make it across the border alive. In season 2, we see them living together in Toronto’s “Little America” district. Prior to joining the show, Erin appeared on episodes of Private PracticeGrey’s AnatomyThe Mentalist, and NCIS: Los Angeles. She also had a recurring role on the sci-fi series Colony, playing the tutor Lindsey.

12. Naomi Putnam (Ever Carradine)

handmaids tale cast

When she’s not playing Chase Stein’s mom, Jane, on Marvel’s Runaways, Ever Carradine can be found wearing a dark-green dress as Naomi, a Wife who became a mother via Janine’s baby. “I love watching the show. It’s the only show I’ve ever been on where when I’m on-set, I actively think, how can I help Offred escape Gilead?” she told KTLA in January 2018. “I can’t separate reality from fiction.”

13. Commander Putnam (Stephen Kunken)

handmaids tale cast

The veteran theater actor perfected his craft at Juilliard, which is probably why his portrayal of Commander Putnam is so bone-chillingly good. On season 1, episode 10, “Night,” Putnam’s left arm is amputated as punishment for having an affair with Janine and leading her to believe he was going to leave his wife for her. Allegedly.

14. Ofrobert/Alma (Nina Kiri)

handmaids tale cast

Nina Kiri, who was born in Serbia and grew up in Canada, revealed in 2017 that she originally thought Ofrobert/Alma would only be in a couple episodes. Flash-forward to season 2 and her character is cri-ti-cal. In one particularly gory scene, Ofrobert’s hand is cuffed to a stovetop. You can guess what happened next.

15. Ofglen #2 (Tattiawna Jones)

handmaids tale cast

During season 1, Tattiawna Jones is the second Ofglen, replacing Emily. When the Handmaids are forced to stone Janine to death, Ofglen #2 is the first to speak up and question Aunt Lydia’s command. “Seriously? Guys, this is insane,” she says, before getting knocked in the face by a Guardian. Tattiawna has also worked on the western series Strange Empire and the crime drama 19-2. Most recently, she played an FBI agent on the USA Network crime show Eyewitness.

16. Mexican Ambassador Castillo (Zabryna Guevara)

handmaids tale cast

Following work on Law & Order: Special Victims UnitBlue Bloods, and CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, Zabryna Guevara left the crime drama world and headed to Gotham. No really—over two seasons, she starred as police captain Sarah Essen on Fox’s Gotham. In 2017, she appeared on The Handmaid’s Tale as Mexican ambassador Castillo, who arrives in Gilead to discuss trade of Handmaids in the wake of her own country’s shortage of babies.

17. Mr. Flores (Christian Barillas)

handmaids tale cast

If you thought Mr. Flores—an assistant to the Mexican ambassador—looked familiar, chances are you’ve seen him on Modern Family (he was Pepper’s assistant-turned-boyfriend Ronaldo and he always had great hair). During season 1, Mr. Flores is the first to tell June that Luke is alive. He later helps June deliver a message to Luke in Canada: “I love you so much. Save Hannah.”

18. Beth (Kristen Gutoskie)

handmaids tale cast

The Toronto-born actress plays a Martha who works at Jezebel’s and occasionally barters with Nick for drugs for the Jezebels to use after they sleep with Commanders and other officials. Kristen Gutoskie has appeared on several Canadian and American TV shows, including the cop drama Rookie Blue and The Vampire Diaries. In late 2017, she joined the second season of Fox’s TV adaptation of Lethal Weapon, playing Molly.

19. Doctor (Kristian Bruun)

handmaids tale cast

Prior to making routine pre-Ceremony checkups in Gilead, Kristian Bruun enjoyed a lengthy stay on Orphan Black, playing Allison’s husband and monitor, Donnie Hendrix. On his Handmaid’s episode, Brunn plays the doctor who offers his sperm to Offred because it’s that obvious the Commander’s sperm is inept. She kindly refuses and eventually Nick impregnates her.

20. Zoe (Rosa Gilmore)

handmaids tale cast

A graduate of NYU’s Tisch, Rosa Gilmore played Zoe, a rebel who saves Luke and gives him antibiotics for his gunshot wound in season 1. In the episode, Zoe puts Luke in his place: To prove why he can’t stay in Gilead looking for his family, she shows him a church full of people who were hanged to death. The scene inspires him to leave for Canada.

21. Dan (John Carroll Lynch)

handmaids tale cast

John Carroll Lynch is a seasoned character actor who’s appeared in films like Shutter IslandGran Torino, and Zodiac. He’s also been the face of Twisty the Clown on American Horror Story (Freak Show and Cult). On The Handmaid’s Tale, John plays Dan, Emily’s college boss who tries to warn her about her “lifestyle” and advises her to change the home screen (a photo of her wife and their kid) on her phone.

22. Mrs. O’Conner (Marisa Tomei)

handmaids tale cast

The only problem with Marisa Tomei’s guest-starring role as Mrs. O’Conner, a Wife who is sent to the Colonies for committing “a sin of the flesh,” is that she did not get enough screen time. Here’s hoping that the actress, who rarely appears on TV these days (she was on Empire in 2015 before this), at least returns to THT in flashbacks.

23. Sylvia (Clea DuVall)

handmaids tale cast

Clea DuVall, who most recently blessed the world with the role of Marjorie on Veep, joined season 2 of THT as Emily’s wife, Sylvia. In a heartbreaking scene, the couple is separated at the border as Sylvia and their young son board a plane for Canada. Emily, an American, is forced to stay behind after an uncomfortable questioning period concerning her reproductive parts.

24. Eden Spencer (Sydney Sweeney)

Clothing, Pink, Fashion, Dress, Shoulder, Fashion model, Robe, Outerwear, Textile, Haute couture,

Sydney Sweeney’s career is about to BlowUp. Which isn’t exactly a surprise given her incredible performance as Nick’s wife, Eden, on The Handmaid’s Tale. Not only will Sydney appear in Leonardo DiCaprio’s upcoming summer movie Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, but she’s also in HBO’s buzzy new show Euphoria. And you probably recognize her as Alice in Sharp Objects. Basically, she’s in literally everything cool.

25. Isaac (Rohan Mead)

Hair, Face, Chin, Forehead, Eyebrow, Hairstyle, Cheek, Nose, Head, Jaw,

Rohan plays Sydney’s onscreen love interest, Isaac, who (in true Romeo + Juliet style) rejects the customs of Gilead and chooses to die in the name of romance. Obviously, his character is RIP—but you can catch Isaac looking hunky IRL over on Instagram.

26. Commander Lawrence (Bradley Whitford)

Eyewear, Glasses, Chin, Beard, Facial hair, Moustache, Vision care, Photography, White-collar worker, Fictional character,

Okay, who else is completely obsessed with Bradley Whitford on this show? His performance as the clearly sociopathic but kinda-sorta-good (???) Commander Lawrence is iconic, and Bradley loved playing the part: “It’s an amazing character,” he told Variety. “You get these characters once in a while where there are several things going on simultaneously—several contradictory and dangerous things.”

27. Hannah (Jordana Blake)

Hair, Face, Hairstyle, Nose, Skin, Cheek, Afro, Jheri curl, Eyebrow, Chin,

Jordana Blake is obviously a child actress, but her résumé is all kinds of impressive. Not only does she kill it playing Offred’s daughter, Hannah, in The Handmaid’s Tale, but she’s also in The Umbrella Academy and has a role in Jason Momoa’s upcoming sci-fi show See. Side note: She’s cute as hell!

28. Holly (Cherry Jones)

Face, Skin, Nose, Chin, Wrinkle, Iris, Neck, Smile, Makeover,

June’s ultra-feminist mom, Holly, is played by the crazy-talented acting veteran Cherry Jones. She’s been in literally ev-er-y-thing, from American Crime to Black Mirror to Transparent to 24. Oh, and she has won multiple Tony awards for her work onstage—just saying.

29. Odette (Rebecca Rittenhouse)

Hair, Face, Facial expression, Eyebrow, Lip, Nose, Beauty, Hairstyle, Chin, Cheek,

Rebecca Rittenhouse was only in one episode of The Handmaid’s Tale (at least so far), but it was heartbreaking. Rebecca played Moira’s girlfriend, Odette, who was sent to the Colonies and died there. Since the episode aired, the actress has landed herself roles in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (along with Eden Spencer!) and Mindy Kaling’s television adaptation of Four Weddings and a Funeral.

30. Annie (Kelly Jenrette)

Hair, Face, Hairstyle, Black hair, Beauty, Eyebrow, Lip, Human, Jheri curl, Forehead,

Like Odette, the character of Annie only showed up in one episode of The Handmaid’s Tale but still made a huge impression. Kelly Jenrette—who stars in Jessica Biel’s upcoming show Limetown (based on the podcast, guys!)—played Luke’s first wife, Annie. She confronted June during a super-powerful scene and accused her of sabotaging their relationship. Awk.

31. Dolores/Ofsamuel (Jenessa Grant)

Face, Hair, Facial expression, Skin, Eyebrow, Nose, Cheek, Lip, Chin, Head,

The Handmaid’s Tale is probably Canadian actress Jenessa Grant’s biggest acting gig yet, but you might remember her from Reign if you’re a fellow CW nerd. Jenessa played one of Queen Mary’s ladies-in-waiting, but on The Handmaid’s Tale, she’s one of Offred’s fellow ladies in red and the shopping partner of Brianna—who’s up next!

32. Brianna/Oferic (Bahia Watson)

Hairstyle, Outerwear, Photography, Black hair, Portrait,

Actress Bahia Watson plays Brianna, who’s been a fixture in Gilead since season 1. She was notably one of the first Handmaids to throw down her stone and refuse to kill Janine—and while it’s unclear if she’s officially part of the resistance, she definitely has a lot of fight in her. Aside from The Handmaid’s Tale, Bahia was cast in Star Trek: Discovery and produces her own music under the name “bahia bahia.”

33. Commander Cushing (Greg Bryk)

Facial hair, Beard, Hair, Facial expression, Moustache, Chin, Nose, Forehead, Human, Jaw,

Commander Cushing is deranged levels of evil, and Greg Bryk is all kinds of convincing in the role. The Commander was accused of treason in season 2, and now Greg is busy completing post-production on a million different TV shows—including Ian Somerhalder’s terrifying new series V-Wars (it’s about a casual virus that’s released and threatens to destroy humanity, no bigs).

34. Dr. Hodgson (Karen Glave)

Hair, Face, Hairstyle, Beauty, Black hair, Lip, Photography, Portrait photography, Fashion accessory, Style,

Remember that devastating episode in season 2 when baby Angela was sick and the only person who could save her was a Martha who formerly worked as a neonatologist? Yeah, well, Karen Glave took on the role and she nailed it. Here’s to hoping she comes back in season 3….

35. Grace Williams (Paula Boudreau)

Face, Skin, Nose, Head, Chin, Eyebrow, Forehead, Wrinkle, Cheek, Neck,

Ya girl Grace is the wife of Commander Steven, and she’s actually a pretty decent person—she gives Emily frequent outs during their Ceremony. Actress Paula Boudreau nabbed the role, and if you’re wondering where you’ve seen her familiar face before, that’d be Degrassi: The Next Generation. She played Ms. Dawes, y’all! SHE LITERALLY KNOWS DRAKE.

36. Commander Grinnell (Chris Gillett)

Suit, Formal wear, Tuxedo, White-collar worker, Smile, Bow tie, Tie,

Another day, another terrifying Handmaid’s Tale Commander IRL. Toronto-based actor Chris Gillett plays Grinnell, who’s best known ’round Gilead for being generally sleazy and gross. Chances are you haven’t seen that many of Chris’s other projects, but he was in The Glass Castle and The Good Witch!

37. Kit (Novie Edwards)

Hair, Hairstyle, Black hair, Nose, Beauty, Chin, Forehead, Human, Afro, Photography,

We met Kit briefly during Emily’s stay in the Colonies, where we saw her marry her girlfriend before passing away. The extremely moving role was taken on by Novie Edwards, who’s known for voice work in several animated shows, including Cyberchase.

38. Rachel Tapping (Krista Morin)

Hair, Face, Hairstyle, Eyebrow, Chin, Beauty, Skin, Lip, Forehead, Fashion model,

Hopefully you recognize Krista Morin’s Rachel as one of the few good people on this show. She’s not onscreen that often, but her character is a fixture at the United States consulate in Toronto, where she looks after refugees. FYI, Rachel is definitely one of the biggest roles Krista has had, but her résumé is extensive, so it’s no surprise she’s nailing the part.

39. Commander Pryce (Robert Curtis Brown)

White-collar worker, Suit, Event, Businessperson,

Commander Pryce is as creepy as it gets in Gilead (he’s the one who came up with the entire concept of the Ceremony), but he was actually killed off during the bombing at the end of season 2. Don’t sweat it though: Veteran actor Robert Curtis Brown has tons of work in other shows—he’s literally been in everything, from General Hospital to Dear White People.

40. Eleanor Lawrence (Julie Dretzin)

Face, Eyebrow, Hair, Nose, Cheek, Forehead, Chin, Skin, Lip, Head,

We don’t spend too much time with Eleanor Lawrence (Commander Lawrence’s wife) in season 2, but I’m guessing we’ll see more of her next season. She’s already a fascinating character despite her short screen time, and she’s clearly deeply disturbed by the fact that her husband is responsible for the Colonies. Meanwhile, you *might* recognize actress Julie Dretzin from her minor roles in How to Get Away with MurderDirty John, and Revenge.
