Call The Midwife fans eagerly await the upcoming prequel, whispers of the show’s future stir emotions.
Call The Midwife fans share fears it is coming to an end.
BBC Viewers took to Reddit on Sunday, February 8, to share their thoughts on Call The Midwife, which left some feeling frustrated over the latest episode. The long-running fan favourite has aired on the public broadcaster for 15 series, and at the end of this year, a prequel to the period drama is set to be released, leaving fans sceptical about how some storylines in the current season could spell the end for the show.
One wrote: “This episode is giving the beginning of the end energy.” While a second predicted that Judy Parfitt’s character Sister Monica Joan could meet her demise, as they added: “Yeah, definitely preparing for sister Monica Joan’s death. Ready for prequel.” Another observed: “100% everything is getting wrapped up.”
Call The Midwife has aired on the BBC for over a decade.
For a while, there has been speculation that the series might be drawing to a close but last year the BBC previously confirmed that the show would remain at the “heart of the BBC for years to come” with two Christmas specials, a feature film, and a prequel series.
Call the Midwife creator Heidi Thomas recently shared an exciting update about the much-anticipated spin-off series. Set during World War 2 (WW2), the series will follow younger versions of Sister Julienne, Sister Evangelina, and Sister Monica Joan – played by Jenny Agutter, Pam Ferris, and Judy Parfitt in the main series. Thomas noted that Sister Monica Joan “isn’t that young when we did the maths, but she’s very much in her prime.”
There will also be new characters, including “three young midwives, all completely new, relatively new to the East End, and they really do get thrown in at the deep end.”
Thomas added to Radio Times: “I think the interesting thing for me is it’s a world where women are not in charge when war breaks out, but very rapidly, they are in charge of everything because the men are called away, either to Home Front-based war work or they go overseas. So you’ll see a lot of women coming into their own … it’s a programme that is going to be about strong women above all else.”
The cast for the spin-off has yet to be announced. On the current show, Dame Vanessa Redgrave provides the iconic voiceover for Call the Midwife, narrating as Jennifer Worth since the series began in 2012, but some question whether she will remain or be replaced by another narrator.
