In Outlander season 7, episode 3, the aftermath of the Fraser’s Ridge fire forces the characters to confront the mystery of Mrs. Bug’s secret stash of gold — a discovery that only deepens the legend of the cursed Jacobite treasure. Known as the Frenchman’s gold, this fortune first appeared in season 5, when it was divided into three portions that eventually helped Jocasta and Hector Cameron establish their lives in America. Originally meant to fund the Jacobite uprising of 1745, the gold never reached its destination in time, rendering it useless to Bonnie Prince Charlie despite his desperate efforts in season 2 to secure aid from France.
Jamie’s letter urging Brianna to have the gold blessed by a priest and Roger’s comments about its cursed reputation both highlight the misfortune that has always surrounded it. Though Mrs. Bug wasn’t directly tied to the original theft, her involvement with the treasure ultimately led to her death in episode 3. Throughout the series, the Frenchman’s gold has been a recurring symbol of greed and doom — and as Mrs. Bug’s fate shows, those who seek to possess it often pay the ultimate price.
Mrs. Bug Would Be Alive If She Didn’t Return For The Gold
While Jamie saw the Bugs as thieves after discovering the Frenchman’s gold hidden in his home in Outlander season 7, episode 3, Arch Bug insisted he was merely following orders — taking what Hector Cameron had left behind to be shared among the clan. Yet, Mrs. Bug’s decision to return for the gold stemmed from a deeper sense of entitlement, believing that after years of loyal service to the Frasers, she and her husband had earned it. Her pride ultimately led to her downfall; in attempting to shoot Jamie, she sealed her own fate. Still, her motivations aligned her more closely with the many others who met their end chasing the cursed Jacobite treasure than with Arch Bug himself.
Brianna’s Coworker Kidnaps Jemmy Because Of The Jacobite Gold In The Books
The information Jamie and Claire included in their letters to Brianna in Outlander season 7 may unintentionally put Jemmy in danger. In Diana Gabaldon’s An Echo in the Bone, Rob Cameron kidnaps Jemmy in 1980 after realizing that by threatening the Mackenzies, he might uncover the whereabouts of the legendary Jacobite gold. Cameron’s elaborate scheme to force Jemmy to reveal the treasure’s location sets off a chain of perilous events — even leading Roger to travel back in time to save his son. Cameron’s ruthless actions, risking a child’s life just to prove the gold’s existence, further reinforce the notion that the Jacobite treasure carries a deadly curse.
France Sent The Gold To Help Bonnie Prince Charlie With The Jacobite Rebellion
Although Jamie and Claire traveled to France in Outlander season 2 in hopes of preventing the looming Scottish rebellion, Bonnie Prince Charlie’s presence there had an entirely different aim — to secure financial backing and supporters for the Jacobite cause. Unfortunately, the gold meant to aid the uprising reached Scotland too late, leaving many Scots convinced it should still have been used to help the clans, especially after the devastating loss at Culloden. In Outlander, the Frenchman’s gold changed hands countless times, never fulfilling its intended purpose. This makes Arch Bug’s desire to share it with his fellow Scots somewhat noble — even if Jamie ultimately chose to hide the treasure for Jemmy’s future.
