‘Lesbian Restaurant!’ – Cate Blanchett Cracks Up at Kate McKinnon’s Wild ‘Carol’ Skit

Carol was a solemn drama about clandestine lesbian love in the 1950s.

So when comedians Kate McKinnon, 32, and Kumail Nanjiani, 38, decided to skewer it as part of their hosting duties at the Independent Spirit Awards, star Cate Blanchett could barely contain herself.

The 46-year-old, who was nominated for best female lead, was taken aback when SNL vet Kate appeared in a short pre-recorded clip as the married Carol Aird from the film.

While things start out well enough, with Kate attempting to seduce the younger, naive Therese, things take a turn for the hilarious when Kumail, known for starring in HBO’s Silicon Valley, shows up as the clueless waiter.

After some jokes about questionable food ordering practices and peculiar 1950s tastes, things get even wackier as Kumail joins the table.

He soon attempts to deduce why the women are acting strangely, and comes to the incorrect conclusion that Kate is in fact trying to seduce him, as opposed to the young ingenue.

Of course he gets straightened out when Kate points out that he works in a lesbian restaurant.

Things get even crazier when Wanda Sykes and Jane Lynch make a cameo appearance at their own lesbian lunch one table over.

Eventually, the two invite Kate over, suggesting they may be able to provide more of what Kate may be after, as they have more experience.

When the clip ended, cameras cut back to the table at which all the film’s participants were seated.

All were laughing uproariously, including Rooney Mara, 30, who played Therese in the film, and director Todd Haynes, who couldn’t stop clapping.

Cate, however, seemed to enjoy the skit the most, and at one point could be seen wiping away tears.

While the film was nominated in several categories, it only managed to take home the prize for best cinematography.

Cate missed out to Brie Larson in the Best Actress category.

The multiple academy award winner later contributed her own bit of perhaps inadvertent comedy to the show.

Cate and costar Rooney Mara took to the stage to present their film Carol as a nominee for Best Feature.

Blanchett, however, fumbled during her speech, accidentally saying ‘make the words come alive on the teleprompter’ instead of ‘make the words come alive on the page.’

The Australian actress quickly caught herself and laughed nervously as she corrected the error.
