Brokeback Mountain, starring Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal, has become an all-time classic since its 2005 debut. The story of Ledger and Gyllenhaal’s cowboy characters, whose love is forbidden, sent shockwaves through the gay community.

The film not only made history, but it was also widely praised and won several awards. The movie’s production, however, wasn’t without its share of challenges, and a single accident on set could have scuttled the whole thing.

The announcement of Brokeback Mountain made headlines for its controversial subject matter. Two men having an affair was the central plot of this box-office hit. It also featured two promising young actors, Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal, who were set to make their film debuts.

Heath Ledger was already well-known in the entertainment industry thanks to his versatility and ability to shine under the brightest spotlights. Before his role in Brokeback Mountain, he had appeared in films like 10 Things I Hate About YouThe PatriotA Knight’s Tale, and Monster’s Ball. This casting decision was brilliant, as Ledger was a natural fit for the part.

Jake Gyllenhaal, born into an acting family and made good use of his skills on set, played opposite Heath Ledger. Before he landed Brokeback Mountain, Gyllenhaal had been acting for quite some time, with credits including October SkyDonnie Darko, and The Good Girl.

Several A-list actors were considered for the lead roles in Brokeback Mountain, but Heath Ledger and Gyllenhaal stood out as the most brilliant picks when the smoke cleared.

When Heath Ledger Almost Broke A Nose

The actors always give their all during filming to ensure their scenes appear and feel natural. But it can cause some unexpected situations at times. The on-screen chemistry between Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal became too intense during filming, injuring Gyllenhaal.

“Heath almost broke my nose in a kissing scene. He grabs me and he slams me up against the wall and kisses me. And then I grab him and I slam him up against the wall and I kiss him. And we were doing take after take after take. I got the s*** beat out of me. We had other scenes where we fought each other, and I wasn’t hurting as badly as I did after that one.”

One might expect something like this to happen during a fight scene, but the intensity of the performance from both actors was surprising. But the shoot went on, and it ended, leaving the actors to wait for the finished product to hit theatres.

After its 2005 release, Brokeback Mountain was an instant financial success. After grossing $178 million, the film received so much positive attention that it became a leading Oscar contender.

The movie was nominated for several major awards, including the Academy Award for Best Picture. It won several Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay. It was a huge success for everyone involved, and the Library of Congress has since added it to its National Film Registry.
