Brokeback Mountain’s Untold Stories: 10 Behind-the-Scenes Secrets You Didn’t Know

Ang Lee’s Brokeback Mountain stands as one of the most influential films of the 2000s, yet it nearly never made it to the screen due to a host of behind-the-scenes challenges. At the 78th Academy Awards, when Crash was unexpectedly named Best Picture, the audience reacted with audible shock — even Jack Nicholson, who announced the winner, seemed surprised. Most people had anticipated Brokeback Mountain to take home the top honor.

Lee’s film was a poignant and heartbreaking love story, a landmark for LGBTQ+ visibility in mainstream cinema, and widely regarded as one of the best films of 2005.

While Crash isn’t without merit, it’s often criticized for being overly didactic and lacking the emotional depth of the cowboy romance. In contrast, Brokeback Mountain has had a lasting impact on cinema and remains far more resonant over time.

However, the film’s road to the big screen was anything but smooth. Its subject matter posed a significant hurdle during early development, and production brought its own set of bizarre complications — from sheep that refused to drink water, to big-name actors dropping out, and even audition stories involving princess costumes. Despite being, at its core, a straightforward romantic drama, the film’s journey was filled with surprising and chaotic moments.

Heath Ledger Nearly Broke Jake Gyllenhaal’s Nose During Brokeback Mountain’s Kissing Scene

The intense passion in Brokeback Mountain’s more intimate scenes is well-known, but Jake Gyllenhaal once revealed just how physically demanding they could be. According to the actor, while filming one of the kissing scenes with Heath Ledger, things got so heated that it nearly resulted in an injury. As Gyllenhaal recalled (via The Things), Ledger almost broke his nose during the moment.

“He grabs me and he slams me up against the wall and kisses me. And then I grab him and I slam him up against the wall and I kiss him. And we were doing take after take after take. I got the s*** beat out of me.”

Despite the pain, the intensity of those scenes contributed to the raw authenticity that made the film so powerful.

Gus Van Sant & Joel Schumacher Both Wanted To Direct Brokeback Mountain

During Brokeback Mountain’s early development, several openly gay filmmakers expressed interest in directing the project — including Gus Van Sant and Joel Schumacher (via The New York Times). Van Sant ultimately went on to direct Milk, the acclaimed biopic about gay rights icon Harvey Milk. Known for his emotionally intense and often haunting dramas, Van Sant would have brought a powerful vision to the cowboy romance.

Although Joel Schumacher is best remembered for his poorly received Batman films, his broader, often underrated filmography suggests he, too, had the potential to deliver a compelling take on the story.

Anne Hathaway Auditioned For Brokeback Mountain In Her Princess Diaries 2 Costume

When Anne Hathaway first received the script for Brokeback Mountain, she was initially considered for the role of Alma. However, as she read through it, she found herself more drawn to the character of Lureen. At the time, Hathaway was filming The Princess Diaries 2, and had to squeeze in the audition during a break from set (via Cinemablend).

Director Ang Lee recalled, “Anne came in, wearing heavy makeup and dressed as a princess, because she was shooting a parade scene for The Princess Diaries 2… She used her lunch hour to audition.”

According to Lee, the casting director even felt the need to apologize for Hathaway’s appearance, unsure how Lee would react to her arriving in full royal glam — but it turns out she made quite the impression anyway.

Ang Lee Faced Constant Difficulties With Brokeback Mountain’s Sheep

Emma Thompson once shared in the published screenplay for Sense and Sensibility that director Ang Lee had such a hard time working with sheep on that set that he swore never to work with animals again. Ironically, years later, Lee would direct Brokeback Mountain — a film centered around two men who meet while herding sheep.

True to his earlier frustrations, Lee once again found himself battling behind-the-scenes livestock chaos. According to the LA Times, sheep proved to be stubborn co-stars. For one scene, Lee spent an entire day trying to get them to drink from a running stream — only to later discover that sheep typically won’t drink from moving water, preferring ponds or still sources instead.

To make matters worse, there were biosecurity concerns as well: the production had to carefully manage the mixing of American and Canadian sheep to prevent the spread of disease.

Heath Ledger & Jake Gyllenhaal Were Required To Attend Cowboy Camp For Brokeback Mountain

One of the key elements that makes Brokeback Mountain such a compelling adaptation is its authentic portrayal of cowboys — something that can be credited in part to the “cowboy camp” both Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal attended prior to filming.

However, Ledger, who grew up on farms in Western Australia, hardly needed the training (via Entertainment Weekly). He already possessed the natural ease and skill required for the role. Director Ang Lee recalled, “He was a natural. He was so good with animals, too. When he sat on that horse, there was no doubt in anyone’s mind. He was a cowboy.”

In contrast, Gyllenhaal had much less experience with ranch life and needed significantly more preparation to embody the physicality of a working cowboy.

Matt Damon & Ben Affleck Were Considered To Play Brokeback Mountain’s Male Leads

Before Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal ultimately landed the lead roles in Brokeback Mountain, a number of major actors were considered during the film’s early development. According to Us Magazine, names like Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Billy Crudup, and Colin Farrell were all on the table at various points.

Mark Wahlberg was also approached but reportedly declined the role due to the script’s sexually explicit content. Meanwhile, Joaquin Phoenix was rumored to have been offered a part, though he has denied ever receiving it — and said he would’ve gladly accepted if he had.

Josh Hartnett has publicly expressed regret over turning down the film, mentioning that his potential pairing would have been with Phoenix. Actor Joseph Fiennes was so determined to be cast that he met with three different directors who were attached to the project during its lengthy development process.

Brokeback Mountain Crew Members Unknowingly Used The Same Book As A Visual Reference

Brokeback Mountain is widely praised for its authentic portrayal of 1960s Wyoming, and that realism extended deeply into the film’s costume and set design. Costume designer Marit Allen found inspiration in a book of Richard Avedon’s photographs documenting life in the American West during the 1950s and ’60s (via Focus Features).

Interestingly, she wasn’t alone — several other members of the production team had independently turned to the same book as a visual reference. No one had suggested it to each other; they all gravitated toward it naturally, a creative coincidence that spoke to their shared vision for the film. Even the screenwriters had used the same book during pre-production, reinforcing the cohesive aesthetic and historical accuracy that defined the film’s visual tone.

The Shirts Worn By Brokeback Mountain’s Lead Actors Sold For More Than $100,000

Ennis and Jack’s shirts are more than just costume pieces in Brokeback Mountain — they serve as powerful symbols of memory, love, and loss throughout the film. Their careful placement in each character’s wardrobe becomes a subtle yet emotional element of the visual storytelling.

After the film’s release, these shirts became iconic in their own right. In what’s believed to be the most expensive vintage clothing auction of its kind, film historian and LGBTQ+ activist Tom Gregory purchased the original shirts used in the movie for a staggering $101,100 on eBay (via Today).

Gregory described the garments as this generation’s equivalent of The Wizard of Oz’s ruby slippers, saying, “I would never wear them, put them on, or separate them.” The shirts, still entwined as they appeared in the film, now stand as a lasting tribute to one of cinema’s most poignant love stories.

Heath Ledger & Michelle Williams Fell In Love While Filming Brokeback Mountain

While Brokeback Mountain is known for its honest and heartbreaking portrayal of love on screen, a real-life romance quietly blossomed behind the scenes. Heath Ledger and Michelle Williams, who played Ennis and Alma, fell for each other during production and began dating. Their relationship deepened quickly, and just before the film’s premiere, Williams gave birth to their daughter, Matilda Rose Ledger.

One pivotal moment on set hinted at the undeniable chemistry between them. According to Out Magazine, Williams injured her knee during a stunt, and Ledger’s reaction was immediate and deeply tender. Screenwriter Diana Ossana recalled, “I remember him looking at her, and she looking up at him with these wide eyes. She was almost startled by the attention he was giving her.”

It was a quiet, unspoken spark that everyone on set could feel — a love story born within another.

Brokeback Mountain Saved Ang Lee From An Early Retirement

Ang Lee had been interested in directing Brokeback Mountain years before it finally came to life, but his initial attempt to get the project off the ground didn’t succeed. In the meantime, he went on to direct Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Hulk — two massive undertakings that left him emotionally drained and questioning his future in filmmaking (via HuffPost).

At one point, Lee even considered retirement. Believing someone else had already made Brokeback Mountain, he asked producer James Schamus how the project had turned out. “I thought somebody did it already,” Lee recalled. “Then one day I was just asking James, ‘How did that movie turn out?’ And he said, ‘No, it’s not made yet.’”

That revelation reignited Lee’s creative spark. He went on to make the film he had always wanted to, and Brokeback Mountain not only became one of his most acclaimed works — it also restored his passion for cinema.
