Before The Last of Us, Pedro Pascal Was Hiding in This Hit Video Game

Pedro Pascal in The Last of Us Season 2

Pedro Pascal is currently one of the biggest names in the entertainment industry. He first rose to fame as Oberyn Martell and later captured an even larger audience through his lead role in The Mandalorian. More recently, he brought to life the iconic video game character Joel in HBO’s The Last of U

Paolo In The Dishonored 2 Gameplay Trailer

The Dishonored franchise, created by Arkane Studios, stands out as one of the most unique stealth-action games in recent memory. Set in a steampunk-inspired universe influenced by Victorian London and the whaling era, the series blends rich storytelling, supernatural powers, and meaningful player choices—where nearly every decision shapes the world around you.

Although Pedro Pascal doesn’t feature in the original Dishonored, he plays a crucial role in the Dishonored 2 expansion, Death of the Outsider. In the game, Pascal voices Paolo, the magnetic yet menacing head of the Howler Gang, a powerful criminal group. Paolo is a fierce and threatening character—a stark departure from more nurturing roles like Joel in The Last of Us, which earned Pascal the unofficial title of “TV’s dad.”

Paolo At The End Of Dishonored 2

Despite Paolo’s brutal tactics and fearsome reputation, he’s far from a typical villain. Cunning, influential, and admired by many in the city, he functions more like a rebellious folk hero than a crime boss. His harsh approach is rooted in a genuine desire to better his community. The role allows Pascal to showcase his versatility in voice acting, bringing depth and complexity to the character.

Though Pascal has gained widespread fame in recent years, his contribution to the Dishonored universe remains relatively overlooked. That subtlety might actually highlight his talent—even longtime fans were surprised to learn that the voice behind Paolo belonged to a now-familiar face.

It’s fairly common these days for big-name actors to lend their talents to video games. The Fable franchise is particularly well-known for its celebrity-filled voice casts, and stars like Keanu Reeves have taken on major roles in titles such as Enter the Matrix and Cyberpunk 2077. Even smaller-scale indie games, like 2021’s The Artful Escape, have featured notable actors including Lena Headey and Mark Strong.

What makes Pedro Pascal’s involvement unusual is that his voice role in Dishonored 2 remains his only appearance in the world of video games. Although he spent years building his career with smaller roles across film and TV, he’s done surprisingly little voice work. His single contribution to gaming came in 2017—after his breakout as Oberyn Martell in Game of Thrones, but before he rose to global fame with The Mandalorian—a period when his career was just beginning to soar.

“We didn’t even have Atari, we had Colecovision.”

Pascal has expressed a familiarity with modern gaming, though he often talks about video games as a part of his early life. “I don’t have the skill,” he once said. “I was good at like, Super Mario Bros., late ’80s, Punch-Out!!!, that stuff. Even earlier, we didn’t even have Atari, we had Colecovision. It was Mousetrap and Frogger, all that stuff.”

While it’s unclear whether Pascal will return to voice acting in games, he could very well appear in more video game-inspired adaptations. There’s even speculation that he’d be a great fit for a live-action version of Dishonored—perhaps not as Paolo, but as Corvo, the franchise’s silent and brooding lead who is wrongly accused of assassination.

Whether or not Pascal steps back into the Dishonored universe, his portrayal of Paolo in Death of the Outsider is a performance worth revisiting. What could have been a generic, morally gray character became something far more layered, thanks to Pascal’s ability to inject personality and charisma into every line.

Though he’s often perceived as a ruthless gang boss, Paolo is far more than a common thug. Intelligent, persuasive, and deeply influential among the local populace, he serves more as a “thief of the people” than a kingpin. His methods are brutal, but his intentions reflect a genuine desire to improve life in the city. Paolo is a nuanced character who really highlights Pascal’s voice acting range.

Even though he’s been in the spotlight in recent years, Pedro Pascal’s involvement in the Dishonored series has flown relatively under the radar. That lack of attention could be seen as a testament to how good Pascal really is. He perfectly embodies the character of Paolo, and because of that, many players didn’t realize they were hearing a familiar voice.

It’s not unusual for well-known actors to appear in video games. The Fable series is famous for its all-star voice cast, and Hollywood superstars like Keanu Reeves have appeared in games like Enter the Matrix and Cyberpunk 2077. Even indie games, like 2021’s The Artful Escape, have featured well-known actors such as Lena Headey and Mark Strong.

What’s surprising is that Pedro Pascal’s voice work in Dishonored 2 remains his only video game appearance. Despite spending years taking smaller roles in film and television, he hasn’t done much voice acting. Pascal’s lone video game role came was in 2017, which was after Game of Thrones but before The Mandalorian, so it was at the time when his star was on the rise.

We didn’t even have Atari, we had Colecovision.

Pascal has admitted that he’s very familiar with modern games, but he has said that gaming was a part of his childhood. “I don’t have the skill,” he explained. “I was good at like, Super Mario Bros., late ’80s, Punch-Out!!!, that stuff. Even earlier, we didn’t even have Atari, we had Colecovision. It was Mousetrap and Frogger, all that stuff.”

It doesn’t seem likely that Pascal will return to video game voice acting, but it’s certainly possible that he’ll appear in more video game adaptations in the future. He could even appear in a live-action version of Dishonored, though the actor might not reprise his role as Paolo. Many fans have remarked that Pascal would be the perfect fit for Dishonored‘s main character, Corvo, a bodyguard who is framed for murder.

Whether Pascal will return to the world of Dishonored remains to be seen, but either way, his work in the second game is worth checking out. Paolo could’ve been a stock honorable character, but Pascal brought the character to life and transformed him into the most compelling part of Death of an Outsider.
