Before the Final Season: Let’s Revisit the Unbelievable Wedding of Claire and Lord John Grey

OUTLANDER focuses on the epic love story of Jamie and Claire Fraser, but some fans have been asking whether she married Lord John Grey in a shock twist?

Diana Gabaldon has eight Outlander novels to her name and is working on the ninth instalment right now. The American writer plans to publish a total of 10 books. Outlander focuses on the romance between Jamie Fraser (played by Sam Heughan) and his time traveller wife Claire (Caitriona Balfe) after she accidentally ends up in the 18th century.

Does Claire Fraser marry Lord John Grey in Outlander?

The pair fall deeply in love with a strong sexual chemistry after they are forced to marry for Claire’s protection.

Throughout the course of the series, their love for one another is depicted.

The biggest test of the relationship is when they are forced apart by war and she returns to the 20th century.

For 20 years, they continue their lives in separate eras as Claire raises their daughter Brianna (Sophie Skelton) after reconciling with her first husband Frank Randall (Tobias Menzies).

In the past, Jamie is left close to death after the Battle of Culloden and tries to find solace by marrying Laoghaire MacKenzie (Nell Hudson).

He also fathers a child with Geneva Dunsany (Hannah James) while working as a servant at the English estate of Helwater.

Despite the collective heartache they went through in the two decades apart, once they were reunited it was like nothing had changed between them.

But as every season of Outlander has shown, events are always conspiring against them and putting them in constant danger.

Season five of Outlander will see the American Revolutionary War again threatening the beloved couple.

The writers of the drama are going to be using material from The Fiery Cross and A Breath of Snow and Ashes as the basis for the drama.

However, in the novels there are some major twists and turns which could eventually find their way into the show.

One of the big curveball which fans didn’t seen coming is in the eighth novel in the series where Claire marries Lord John Grey (David Berry).

As fans will know, Lord John is gay and in love with Claire’s husband Jamie, so this seems very strange.

But the book reveals Claire and Lord John have wed in a bid to offer her protection after Jamie is thought to have died.

When Jamie does return, he’s left horrified when he finds his wife and best friend are now an item.

The two men will fight before Jamie and Claire finally make up and it’s back to business for the adventurous couple.

Jamie will also make up with his friend Lord John with the balance finally restored to the world of Outlander overall.

Whether this huge plot point makes it into the Starz TV show remains to be seen but it’s highly likely given it’s such a massive moment in Jamie and Claire’s relationship.

Speaking generally about writing Outlander, Gabaldon told Book Page: “I don’t write with an outline. In fact, I don’t write in a straight line. I write when I can see things happening.

“What I need on any given day to start writing is what I call a kernel. A line of dialogue, an emotional ambience, anything I can sense very concretely. I write very painstakingly in these little disconnected bits.

“But as I write these disconnected pieces, and I continue doing research and of course thinking about the book all the time, they begin to stick together.

“They develop little connections. And I will write something and think, ‘Oh, this explains, finally, why it is what I wrote four months ago happened.’ Then I can see what has to happen next.”
