15 Saddest Game of Thrones Deaths Ranked From Heartbreaking to Devastating

Game-Of-Thrones’-15-Saddest-Deaths,-Ranked

Game of Thrones became one of television’s most talked-about series thanks to its unpredictability and brutal storytelling. No character was ever truly safe — even main figures with rich narrative potential could be killed off at any moment. Based on George R. R. Martin’s novels, the HBO hit made a name for itself by eliminating heroes, villains, and morally complex characters alike without hesitation.

While audiences often relished the shocking twists, the show was also filled with heartbreak. Rarely did a character meet a gentle end; instead, most suffered agonizing deaths, were betrayed by those they trusted most, or faced unimaginable brutality.

Updated August 11, 2025, by Guillermo Kurten: HBO’s A Song of Ice and Fire adaptation has never shied away from devastating its fans by removing beloved characters. From the quiet passing of Maester Aemon Targaryen to the shocking early execution of Ned Stark, these moments left lasting scars on viewers long after the series finale. This list has now been expanded to highlight five additional deaths that remain among the show’s most tragic.

15. Rickon Stark’s Death Was Emotionally Charged

Game of Thrones Season 6, Episode 9, “The Battle of the Bastards”

Ramsay Bolton grins menacingly at a worried Rickon Stark in Game of Thrones.

As Game of Thrones moved forward, Jon Snow increasingly became the centerpiece of the show’s heroic narrative. His confrontation with the cruel Ramsay Bolton — and the desperate attempt to rescue his younger surrogate brother, Rickon Stark — marked Jon’s first major storyline after his resurrection. The series heightened the tension by turning Rickon’s fate into a brutal game, with Ramsay sadistically mocking Jon and Sansa from across the battlefield by pretending to offer the boy a chance at survival.

The lord of House Bolton forced Rickon to sprint toward Jon while dodging a volley of arrows, as Jon charged forward on horseback in a frantic bid to reach him. Inevitably, Rickon was struck down just moments before safety, a scene designed to torment viewers almost as cruelly as it did the Starks themselves. And though Rickon had little presence throughout the show, his harrowing death carried weight because of the grief and anguish it inflicted on Jon and Sansa.

14. Tommen Baratheon Shockingly Takes His Own Life

Game of Thrones Season 6, Episode 10, “The Winds of Winter”

Tommen stares at the sept's explosion in the distance from outside his window in Game of Thrones.

Cersei Lannister caused immense pain throughout her life, but her most infamous act of destruction — blowing up the Sept of Baelor — remains one of the show’s most unforgettable moments of vengeance. As horrific as the spectacle was, it also carried a deeply personal cost. Her last surviving child, King Tommen Baratheon, was gentle, innocent, and painfully naïve — qualities that left him vulnerable to manipulation by both his mother and his wife, Queen Margaery.

When Tommen saw the Sept reduced to rubble with Margaery still inside, he sank into despair and made the unthinkable choice to end his own life. His calm, almost detached walk from the throne room before leaping to his death was as shocking as it was heartbreaking. With all of her children gone, Cersei was left untethered. And once she claimed the Iron Throne in the aftermath of Tommen’s death, her cruelty only grew sharper. Though she wouldn’t be the last tyrant to rule from the Red Keep, her coronation marked the beginning of her most ruthless reign.

13. Aemon Targaryen Was Allowed a Rare Peacefulness in Death

Game of Thrones Season 5, Episode 7, “The Gift”

Maester Aemon on his deathbed in Game of Thrones.

In Game of Thrones, peaceful deaths are a rarity. Yet among the show’s many tragic farewells, Maester Aemon of the Night’s Watch may have had the most serene. The gentle, wise Targaryen passed away quietly in bed of old age, surrounded by brothers who deeply respected him. Though those south of the Wall may never have realized it, Aemon was one of the most invaluable Maesters in all of Westeros.

His final moments were especially poignant. Delirious with age, he spoke to his long-departed brother, Aegon “Egg” Targaryen, murmuring that he had been dreaming of growing old. The scene struck even harder with the knowledge that Jon Snow — Aemon’s blood relative and a fellow brother of the Watch — remained unaware of his own Targaryen heritage. Samwell Tarly’s heartfelt eulogy honored the old Maester beautifully, but it also underscored the gravity of the loss. Just as Westeros was on the brink of facing its darkest threat, the realm had lost one of its wisest and most honorable men.

12. The Citizens of King’s Landing Suffered an Unwarranted Assault

Game of Thrones Season 8, Episode 5, “The Bells”

Daenerys burns King's Landing and its citizens with her dragon in Game of Thrones.

When it comes to the most devastating deaths in Game of Thrones, few moments compare to the massacre at King’s Landing. Unlike the fall of individual characters, the sheer scale of innocent lives lost when Daenerys Targaryen unleashed dragonfire on the city was impossible to overlook. In scope and horror, it rivaled — and arguably surpassed — the terror of the Night King’s undead assault at the Battle of Winterfell.

What made this tragedy even more crushing was its context. Daenerys’ sudden descent into tyranny felt like a rushed and frustrating collapse of her character arc. The mass killing of helpless citizens was needless, especially since the reign of cruel rulers like the Lannisters had already been ended. Watching Daenerys ignore the city’s surrender out of spite, condemning thousands of innocents to burn, was not just heartbreaking — it was one of the show’s cruelest turns, forcing viewers to mourn an entire population rather than a single fallen character.

11. Missandei Became Another Casualty of Cersei’s Cruelty

Game of Thrones Season 8, Episode 4, “The Last of the Starks”

Missandei about to be executed in Game of Thrones.

Missandei of Naath’s fate in the final season of Game of Thrones was a cruel end for a character who had already endured a lifetime of suffering. Once an enslaved interpreter in Astapor, she was freed by Daenerys Targaryen and went on to become one of the queen’s most trusted confidantes. Though she survived the harrowing Battle of Winterfell, she would not escape the cruelty of Cersei Lannister. Captured during Euron Greyjoy’s ambush on the Targaryen fleet, Missandei was taken hostage and paraded as a bargaining chip.

In the end, Cersei ordered The Mountain to execute her in front of Daenerys and her allies. With unflinching courage, Missandei’s final word — “Dracarys” — became both a defiant cry and a plea for vengeance. Game of Thrones had long been known for robbing gentle souls of peaceful endings, but Missandei’s death felt especially brutal. Her journey from slavery to freedom, from silence to agency, was cut short with cold finality. Worse still, her execution served as a narrative device to accelerate Daenerys’ descent into tyranny, making her tragic loss feel doubly bitter.

10. The Tragedy of How Wylis Became Hodor

Game of Thrones Season 6, Episode 5, “The Door”

Hodor's pained expression before his death in Game of Thrones.

The long-running mystery behind Hodor’s name was finally answered in Season 6 of Game of Thrones — and the explanation was as heartbreaking as it was revealing. Through Bran Stark’s visions, the truth of Wylis’ past and his transformation into the simple, kindhearted Hodor came full circle. As Bran edged closer to becoming the Three-Eyed Raven, he witnessed the very moment that shattered Wylis’ mind.

It was Bran’s own actions that caused Wylis to become “Hodor,” a name born from trauma and tied forever to his destiny. In a moment of devastating sacrifice, Hodor quite literally held the door against an unstoppable horde of White Walkers, giving Bran and his companions the chance to survive. His death not only cemented him as one of the show’s most selfless characters, but also proved pivotal to the larger story — without Hodor’s final stand, Bran would have perished, and the living would have stood no chance against the dead.

9. Ned Stark’s Execution Set a Brutal Tone

Game of Thrones Season 1, Episode 9, “Baelor”

Ned Stark looks nervous before his execution in HBO's Game of Thrones series.

Eddard Stark stands out as one of the earliest and most shocking tragic deaths in HBO’s Game of Thrones. Viewers unfamiliar with the books believed Ned would remain central to the series, given his role and connections to so many plots. However, he was executed in the first season after uncovering the truth about the illegitimacy of Cersei’s children.

Both of his daughters, Sansa and Arya, were forced to witness the devastating moment. To make matters worse, Joffrey cruelly displayed Ned’s severed head on a spike before Sansa. Though branded a traitor, Ned was in reality one of the most honorable and loyal men in Westeros. His untimely death also delayed the reveal of Jon Snow’s true parentage, knowledge that could have changed the course of events had it surfaced earlier.

8. Myrcella Baratheon Was an Innocent Caught in a Vengeful Crossfire

Game of Thrones Season 5, Episode 10, “Mother’s Mercy”

Jaime holds Myrcella's dead body in Game of Thrones.

Cersei Lannister committed countless crimes throughout Game of Thrones, both against outsiders and even within her own family. Yet one of her rare redeeming qualities was her unwavering love for her children. She eagerly awaited the chance to embrace her daughter Myrcella again, who had been sent to Dorne to wed Prince Trystane Martell in a political move meant to strengthen ties with House Lannister.

However, following Prince Oberyn Martell’s brutal death at the hands of Sandor Clegane, Ellaria Sand sought vengeance. She robbed Cersei of that reunion and Myrcella of her life. The moment was especially heartbreaking—Myrcella was still young, pure, and undeserving of such a fate. Watching her collapse in Jaime’s arms, just after she had finally recognized him as her true father, made the tragedy all the more devastating.

7. Jon Snow Was Murdered by His Fellow Men

Game of Thrones Season 5, Episode 10, “Mother’s Mercy”

Jon Snow lying dead in the snow in Game of Thrones.

Jon Snow stood out as one of the few truly noble figures in Game of Thrones. Though reluctant, he rose to leadership when circumstances demanded it, becoming Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch after Jeor Mormont’s death. His decision to form an alliance with the Freefolk in order to face the looming threat of the Army of the Dead, however, created growing resentment among his brothers in black.

At Castle Black, what began as a moment of urgency for Jon quickly turned into betrayal. Led by the boy Olly, several members of the Night’s Watch turned on their Lord Commander, stabbing him and leaving him to die alone in the snow. For fans, it was heartbreaking to see such a beloved character cut down by those he had sworn to serve. Luckily, Jon’s story didn’t end there—he was brought back to life and eventually delivered justice to his betrayers.

6. Theon Greyjoy Redeemed & Sacrificed Himself

Game of Thrones Season 8, Episode 3, “The Long Night”

Theon Greyjoy worn out at the Battle of Winterfell in Game of Thrones.

Theon Greyjoy was deeply flawed, yet his story was marked by unimaginable suffering. After enduring Ramsay Bolton’s brutal torture, he lost both his name and sense of self, reduced to living as “Reek” rather than a man or a Greyjoy.

Though Theon committed grave mistakes — including betraying those who had become his true family — he eventually reclaimed his honor and experienced a powerful redemption. That transformation made his final stand all the more heartbreaking, as he gave his life defending Bran from the Night King. Of all the arcs in Game of Thrones’ final season, Theon’s redemption and sacrifice felt among the most deserved.

5. Ygritte’s Life Was Stolen in a Needless Battle

Game of Thrones Season 4, Episode 9, “The Watchers on the Wall”

Ygritte dies in Jon Snow's arms in Game of Thrones.

Ygritte embodied the spirit of freedom and independence, living as a fierce Wildling in the harsh lands beyond the Wall. Alongside her fellow Freefolk — including the ruthless Thenns — she journeyed south to strike the Night’s Watch, all while grappling with her feelings of betrayal after Jon abandoned them to return to his brothers.

Her fate was sealed during the brutal assault on Castle Black. Struck by an arrow loosed by Olly, Ygritte’s last moments were shared with Jon as their eyes met. Though she had once vowed to kill him, she could not follow through. Instead, Jon cradled her as she slipped away, her final words echoing as one of the most memorable goodbyes in the series.

4. Oberyn Met a Gory End by The Mountain’s Hands

Game of Thrones Season 4, Episode 8, “The Mountain and the Viper”

Prince Oberyn battles The Mountain in combat in Game of Thrones.

Oberyn Martell remains one of the most unforgettable characters from Dorne in Game of Thrones, captivating fans with his charm and fearless presence. His duel against The Mountain — both Tyrion’s trial by combat and Oberyn’s personal quest for vengeance over his sister’s murder — became one of the show’s most iconic moments. Yet, Oberyn’s passion and need for confession from his foe cost him dearly. Instead of finishing Gregor Clegane, he lingered too long, giving the monstrous knight the chance to strike back.

In a shocking and gruesome twist, The Mountain brutally killed Oberyn by crushing his skull with his bare hands, leaving audiences horrified. All Oberyn wanted was justice for his family, making his fate all the more devastating. Ellaria’s anguished scream and heartbreak amplified the tragedy, cementing the duel as one of the series’ most shocking and gut-wrenching scenes.

3. Shireeen Baratheon Was Cruelly Burned to Death

Game of Thrones Season 5, Episode 9, “The Dance of the Dragons”

Stannis sacrificed his daughter Shireen in the name of victory in Game Of Thrones

Shireen Baratheon stood out in Game of Thrones as one of the few truly innocent and kind-hearted characters. Bright, gentle, and compassionate, she even taught Ser Davos how to read and treated everyone with warmth. She adored and trusted her father, Stannis, believing he would always protect her. Tragically, despite being the only parent who showed her any affection, Stannis still allowed her to meet a horrific end.

Blinded by his ambition for the Iron Throne, Stannis listened to Melisandre’s counsel and sacrificed his daughter to the Lord of Light, burning her alive in one of the show’s most disturbing moments. Her heartbreaking cries for mercy made the scene unforgettable — and ultimately futile, as Stannis’ quest for power failed. In the end, Ser Davos proved to be the only true father figure Shireen ever had, showing her the love and loyalty her blood family never could.

2. The Red Wedding Deaths Are Etched in Fans’ Minds

Game of Thrones Season 3, Episode 9, “The Rains of Castamere”

Roose Bolton prepares to stab Robb Stark (Richard Madden) in Game of Thrones.

Few moments in Game of Thrones are as shocking or devastating as the infamous Red Wedding. What began as a seemingly joyous feast turned into a nightmare, as Walder Frey’s treachery wiped out Robb Stark, his pregnant wife Talisa, Catelyn Stark, and countless Stark bannermen. The massacre remains one of the series’ darkest twists, ripping away beloved characters in a single stroke.

Talisa’s brutal murder — repeatedly stabbed in the stomach while carrying Robb’s unborn child — was almost unbearable to watch. Robb was riddled with arrows before Roose Bolton delivered the final betrayal by plunging a blade into his heart. Catelyn’s desperate screams for her son ended with her own throat being slit, silencing the Stark matriarch forever. The Red Wedding not only shattered the Stark family but also left viewers reeling in horror. In time, however, Arya Stark avenged the bloodbath by bringing a grisly end to the Freys.

1. Daenerys Targaryen Had a Controversial & Untimely End

Game of Thrones Season 8, Episode 6, “The Iron Throne”

Jon Snow holds a Daenerys' lifeless body in Game of Thrones.

Daenerys Targaryen’s journey was one of Game of Thrones’ most compelling arcs — at least until its divisive final chapter. She rose as a liberator, a warrior, and a queen, only to have it all unravel in the show’s closing stretch. Much like her father, the “Mad King” Aerys II, Daenerys succumbed to the infamous Targaryen madness, unleashing devastation upon King’s Landing with dragonfire.

Her downfall was heartbreaking to witness. The once-hopeful breaker of chains descended into tyranny, and her story ended in betrayal at the hands of Jon Snow, the man she loved and trusted most. While the idea of Daenerys becoming the “Mad Queen” could have worked in theory, the rushed execution left many fans unsatisfied. In the end, her death was mournful not only for the loss of her character but for the unrealized promise of what she could have been, leaving behind a legacy stained with destruction.
