The 2026 Emmy Awards delivered plenty of memorable moments beyond the major wins, with host Mariska Hargitay, surprise celebrity appearances, emotional tributes, and nostalgic reunions helping make the night one to remember.
While The Pitt and Widow’s Bay dominated the awards race, several standout moments captured viewers’ attention throughout the ceremony.

Mariska Hargitay made her debut as Emmy host with an energetic opening segment that featured a playful musical number inspired by Joan Jett & the Blackhearts’ classic hit “I Love Rock ’n’ Roll,” reworked into “I Love TV Screens.” The pre-recorded sketch included appearances from New York Knicks star Jalen Brunson, Jean Smart, Jennifer Coolidge, and several television references that celebrated the medium.
During her opening monologue, Hargitay joked about being the first woman to host the Emmys in 15 years. She also poked fun at Nicole Kidman’s famous AMC advertisement and shared humorous advice she received before taking on hosting duties. Her performance earned praise from attendees, including Amy Poehler.
One of the night’s biggest surprises came during a pre-taped comedy sketch featuring Taylor Swift. Appearing alongside Hargitay’s iconic Law & Order: SVU character Olivia Benson, Swift played a rookie detective involved in a fictional investigation about whether she would attend the ceremony. The sketch referenced Swiftie fan theories and her famous cats, ending with Swift and Hargitay sharing a dramatic pose. In reality, Swift spent the evening at Arrowhead Stadium supporting her husband Travis Kelce during the Kansas City Chiefs’ season opener.
Another emotional highlight came when Sally Field received Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for Remarkably Bright Creatures. The audience gave the veteran actress a standing ovation that nearly drowned out the beginning of her acceptance speech. At 79, Field became the oldest winner in the category’s history. During her speech, she also praised Canada, where the project was filmed.
A separate tribute honored the late Catherine O’Hara. Former co-stars Dan Levy, Annie Murphy, and Macaulay Culkin took the stage to celebrate her legacy, with Culkin affectionately calling her “all our mom.”
The In Memoriam segment featured Noah Kahan performing Simon & Garfunkel’s “Bridge Over Troubled Water” while remembering notable figures the television industry lost over the past year.
Fans also enjoyed a special reunion celebrating the 30th anniversary of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Sarah Michelle Gellar and David Boreanaz reunited on stage months after the planned reboot was canceled. Gellar joked about Buffy and Angel’s unfinished love story while also acknowledging the difficult losses the cast and crew have experienced in recent years.

On the red carpet, Hacks nominee Meg Stalter drew attention by arriving dressed as an actual Emmy statuette, complete with gold makeup, wings, and a globe. Although she ultimately lost the award to Widow’s Bay star Kate O’Flynn, her outfit quickly became one of the most talked-about fashion moments of the night.
