The 41-year-old Duke of Sussex made the remark while appearing on former England rugby star Joe Marler’s podcast, Joe Marler Will See You Now, which was released on Tuesday.

The episode appears to have been recorded during Harry’s recent trip to the UK and filmed at Kennington Podcast Studios in London.

The show sees Marler, 36, play an unqualified pseudo-psychologist, putting celebrity guests through tongue-in-cheek personality tests and mock therapy sessions.

During an intake questionnaire, Marler asked Harry to list his occupation.

Harry replied that he was a “Prince of England”, “Duke” and “full-time dad”.

The response quickly attracted attention, given Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle, stepped back as senior working royals in 2020 before relocating to the US.

“His occupation is Prince of England? I thought he escaped all that on the freedom flight and was living his best life in California?” one YouTube viewer wrote in the comments section.

“Harry is Prince of England? How’s that he resides in Montecito, California!” another said.

Royal reporter Tom Sykes later criticised the interview, arguing the conversation distracted from the Invictus Games, which Harry was promoting.

“Once again, we have this bizarre spectacle that we always seem to have with Harry, where the narrative about him overtakes the narrative about what he’s trying to talk about,” Sykes said.

Sykes said the interview was “very weird”.

“I do think that sometimes we kind of forget how far down the road of extraordinariness Harry has travelled,” Sykes said.

Sykes said the “best thing” he could say about the interview is that it resembled a “lads on tour” chat.

“If I was feeling really generous, I’d say it feels like I’m in the car with a couple of blokes on a long road trip,” he said.

“But the reality is, the tonal whiplash that Harry is giving us, where he’s literally on Saturday doing an event with young children, to this on Monday, it’s absolutely bonkers.”

Sykes questioned the duke’s public image.

“Who are you trying to tell us that you are? Are you this person who has had terrible trauma, has had a really hard life and been manipulated by all these people?” he asked.

“Are you a fearless warrior for truth and justice? Are you a philanthropist? Are you a serious thinker? Or are you actually now, you’ve cycled through all those things, and we’re going back to being a giant clown?”

The royal commentator argued the podcast’s purpose was to support the Invictus Games, but suggested Harry was no longer the ideal figurehead.

“This guy is just not really a good figurehead for a good charity like this anymore,” he said.

However, Sykes praised the inclusion of Harry’s friend and Invictus Games medallist JJ Chalmers in the interview.

He described it as “genuinely moving” and said it served as a reminder of “why the Games exist and why Harry deserves real credit for creating them”.

“Harry himself looks happy (relaxed, laughing, riffing) in a way we rarely see,” Sykes said.

Despite the criticism, many fans took to the comments section of the video to share their love for the interview.

“I love Harry! Solid, genuine, hilarious quick wit,” one fan said, while another wrote: “Harry is fantastic, it was hilarious”.

“I don’t know how y’all pulled this off but bravo to everyone involved. Love to see this show do well,” a third user said.

The podcast was released just days after Harry and Meghan made a private visit to the UK with their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.

The family reportedly reunited with King Charles III and Queen Camilla at Highgrove House in Gloucestershire on Friday in what sources described as a “private family occasion”, with no photographs released.

The meeting is understood to have taken place after Harry attended an Invictus Games event in Birmingham.

It marked the King’s first reported meeting with his grandchildren since 2022.
