Sam Heughan has spent years in the spotlight as Jamie Fraser on Outlander, but being one of the show’s most recognizable stars has also brought an intense level of online scrutiny.
In April 2020, Heughan publicly addressed what he described as six years of “constant bullying,” sharing a deeply personal message about the effect the harassment had on his life and mental state.
“I am at a loss, upset, hurt, and have to speak out,” Heughan wrote at the time. He said the abuse had become a daily concern and claimed that not only he, but also his co-stars, friends and family, had been targeted.

According to Heughan, the harassment included personal insults, shaming, abuse, death threats, stalking, the sharing of private information and what he described as false narratives about his life.
He also addressed several rumors that had circulated about him online. Among the claims he specifically denied were allegations that he manipulated fans, attempted to mislead or pressure them for money, and ignored COVID-19 safety advice.
At the time, much of the criticism was reportedly connected to his decision to remain in Hawaii during the coronavirus pandemic.
Heughan explained that he had traveled there before fully understanding how serious the situation would become. After consulting people he trusted, he decided that staying in Hawaii was the safest option. He said he was isolated, not putting other people at risk and was not a burden on local communities.

The actor also revealed that he had recently been ill for several months and said this made him particularly cautious about his health and surroundings.
Rather than continuing to engage with people who were determined to criticize him, Heughan eventually asked them to simply unfollow him.
“As an actor in these times, we feel impotent,” he wrote, explaining that there was only so much he could do while dealing with the situation. He also pointed to his charitable work, saying he had tried to use his platform to support charities and provide audiences with entertainment and some light relief.
Despite the painful experience, Heughan made sure to end his message by thanking the fans who had continued to support him.
“To every fan that has supported me and the work I do, thank you,” he wrote, expressing his gratitude for their kindness during a difficult period.
His message offered a rare glimpse into the pressure that can come with being a major television star. While Outlander had given Heughan a huge international following, his experience also showed how quickly intense fan attention can cross personal boundaries.
For Heughan, the message was ultimately about drawing a line between legitimate criticism and sustained personal harassment — while reminding his supporters to treat one another with kindness.
