Outlander fans slam ‘cop out’ finale as they fume ‘absolutely stupid’
The Outlander finale has divided fans, with some branding the ending a ‘cop out’ while others called it the best love story ever told.
Outlander has graced our screens for over ten years, and the fantasy historical series has now reached its conclusion with a dramatic finale.
Titled And the World Was All Around Us, the closing instalment featured Jamie (portrayed by Sam Heughan) and Claire Fraser (Caitríona Balfe) making preparations for the confrontation at Kings Mountain.
A flashback revisited the opening instalment of Outlander, where Jamie’s ghost watched Claire in 1940s Inverness.
Without revealing excessive details about the conclusion, viewers were left heartbroken by the devastating events that transpired, including a poignant montage of Jamie and Claire sequences throughout Outlander’s run.
While some viewers praised it as a superb conclusion, numerous others were incensed and headed to X (previously Twitter) to voice their grievances.
One viewer remarked: “#Outlander finale was the most rushed and unnecessary finale of all time and might rival The Sopranos for dumbest ending ever.”
Another wrote: “What an absolutely STUPID ending to the #Outlander TV series.”
A third posted: “What the hell kind of ending is that #outlander,” while a fourth observed: “#Outlander finale a bit of a cop out.”
A fifth contributed: “I’m complaining a lot, but it’s just that they really wasted time on unnecessary things. But oh well, it is what it is, and it’s what they gave us.”
Nevertheless, numerous viewers were moved to tears over the “beautiful” narrative, with one declaring: “The best love story ever, the best couple ever, God, I’m going to miss them so much.”
Another commented: “It’s easy to judge someone for crying over finishing a series, but damn it is THE BEST series with the best love story ever told, thank you #OUTLANDER thank you for taking me to an incredible place like Scotland. Jamie Fraser, I’m going to see and love you until the end of my days.”
A final viewer remarked: “How sentimental this scene made me feel, seeing so many memories of Claire and Jamie, they were always the embodiment of love, I’ll carry them in my heart forever.”
The programme’s stars had no clue which conclusion would be selected for the final edit following the filming of multiple alternatives.
Outlander showrunner Matthew B. Roberts revealed to Entertainment Weekly he wished to leave the series finale open to audience interpretation.
When questioned about whether Jamie and Claire survived, he merely responded, “You tell me. I’m not going to tell any single fan how to interpret that last beat.”
Ambiguous finales have consistently frustrated audiences, who typically favour a conclusive ending with all queries resolved.
