Outlander has officially wrapped on STARZ, but Diana Gabaldon’s book saga still has one final installment left to go.
Back in March 2026, Outlander author Diana Gabaldon reassured fans that the series would receive a satisfying ending. Now that season 8 has come to a close, Gabaldon has also shared her thoughts on whether Book 10 could one day be adapted for the screen.
Speaking with Parade, Gabaldon explained that, given the time constraints, Book 10 would have been impossible to adapt within Outlander—presumably as part of a ninth season. By the time pre-production began on season 8, she said, the book was still “nowhere near being done.”
She has also revealed that she has partially stepped back from the show’s production in order to focus on finishing Book 10, with hopes of releasing it either by the end of 2026 or sometime in 2027.
Diana Gabaldon is open to a Book 10 adaptation

As for the possibility of adapting the final book in the series, Gabaldon said: “After Book 10 comes out, someone can decide if they want to do something televisual with that or not.”
When asked whether she would be comfortable with that, Gabaldon said it would depend on who was behind the project. Ideally, she said, she would want it to be handled by the same creative team that has worked on Outlander for nearly a decade.
When the show moves ahead of the books
Gabaldon has long had a complicated relationship with the adaptation of her bestselling series—at times critical, at times complimentary. More recently, she spoke about how some of the show’s creative changes pushed the story too far away from the books, particularly the death of a major character in Episode 7.
The ninth book in the series, Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone, was published in 2021, around the time the show had just been renewed for a seventh season. Fans had hoped Book 10 would be completed in time for the final season of Outlander, giving the series source material for its ending.
But as Gabaldon herself pointed out, television is a “very active industry,” while “a book moves a lot more slowly.” It’s hard to fault her for taking the time to finish the story properly. This is a beloved series that deserves a strong conclusion, just as Outlander needed a finale that stayed true to the heart of the original story.
The growing Outlander franchise

With the prequel series Blood of My Blood on the way—and Gabaldon’s comments leaving the door open—the Outlander franchise could still expand in several directions. Since season 8 has been confirmed as the show’s final season, we’re not expecting a season 9 built around Book 10.
That said, there has already been speculation about a possible move to the big screen. An Outlander movie would no doubt be welcomed by fans. In the meantime, viewers will at least have the second season of Blood of My Blood to look forward to this fall.
The Outlander finale is now streaming on STARZ.
