Jeremy Irvine Saw A Straitjacket At His Blood Of My Blood Fitting And Knew Henry Was In Trouble

Jeremy Irvine knew Henry and Julia’s time-traveling escape hadn’t gone according to plan when he walked into his Blood of My Blood season 2 costume fitting and found a straitjacket waiting for him.

“We filmed about five different versions of how season one was going to end. I think we’d had me going through, we had Julia going through, we had none of us going through,” the actor tells Entertainment Weekly. “And then I went in for a costume fitting and there was a modern-ish straitjacket on the rail for me to try on, and I thought, ‘Well, hang on, that doesn’t that doesn’t look like it’s ended well for poor Henry.’ Which, of course, it hasn’t.”

That’s putting it lightly. The season 2 premiere of the Outlander prequel picks up immediately after the events of the first, with Henry (Irvine) attempting to use the standing stones to send his wife Julia (Hermione Corfield) and their son William forward in time from 1700s Scotland to their rightful home in 1920s England. However, when they place her hands on boulders… nothing happens.

To make matters worse, the pair is immediately apprehended on their mission by Arch Bug (Terence Rae) and the Grants, who stab Henry with an amethyst-encrusted dagger. As he bleeds, Henry attempts to catch himself on one of the stones and finds himself unexpectedly hurtling through time without his wife and child at his side.

It’s not the outcome Irvine had expected for the time-traveling family. “When we’re filming it, they’re writing it as we go, so I think [the writers] have an outline of what’s going to happen, but we’re sort of finding out episode by episode,” he explains. “They’re quite secretive about that stuff with us, but it’s nice. You get to discover with your character where you’re going.”
When he wakes, Henry discovers that he’s not only returned to the ’20s, but his muddled memories, inability to remember dates, and general confusion have landed him in an Inverness asylum.

“I think myself and Julia in the series, me and Hermione, have probably upset the writers, because we do keep getting put in the most torturous situations, I think,” Irvine teases. “We’re definitely starting from rock bottom and then series two is trying to claw things back.”
