Scots actor Richard Rankin has been announced as the narrator for this year’s Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo.

The Outlander and Rebus star will lend his voice to the 2026 production, titled A Call To Gather, which takes place on the Edinburgh Castle esplanade this August.

Rankin has pre-recorded his narration to guide audiences through the 26-show run, which celebrates global connection, community, and military tradition.

His character will be physically represented during the performance by a recreation of The Call 1914 Statue, an Edinburgh monument honouring Scottish soldiers who served in the First World War.

Rankin, who has attended the event annually for the past six years, said it was an “incredible honour” to take on the prestigious role.

“It will be such a privilege to be part of the experience for thousands of people across the month of August,” he said.

“It’s the coming together of music, culture, military and creativity brought to life by performers, musicians and dancers from all around the world. It really is rivalled by nothing.”

Alan Lane, creative director of the Tattoo, said the actor’s storytelling instincts and deep connection to Scottish arts made him a “natural fit” for the production.

Mr Lane added: “Richard brings a huge amount of emotional depth, character and warmth to A Call To Gather.

“His voice will become an important thread running through the production, helping guide audiences through moments of spectacle, reflection and celebration.”

The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo runs from August 7 to 29.
