Fans of The Testaments will be left questioning why Commander Weston remains keen to wed Agnes following her Episode 7 mishap.

The most recent episode of The Handmaid’s Tale sequel unveiled Agnes’ (played by Chase Infiniti) matches. Despite the teenage girl harbouring feelings for her guardian Garth (Brad Alexander), she has been paired with considerably older prospective husbands, amongst them Commander Weston (Reed Diamond).

Garth was in fact matched with Agnes’ closest friend Becka (Mattea Conforti), which understandably left the central character incensed. Her frustration appeared to boil over into her formal meeting with Weston.

During the encounter with her suitor, Agnes unexpectedly raised the subject of Weston’s late wife. “I only hope I can measure up to your expectations of a wife,” she said. “Especially given you’ve been married before,” reports the Mirror.

The commander visibly stiffened at the reference to his former spouse and brought their meeting to an abrupt end. Before departing, however, he stated: “My wife died in childbirth. It was the worst day of my life, the day I lost my child.”

Despite appearing to have dashed any prospects of wedding the senior commander, Agnes’ stepmother Paula (Amy Seimetz) subsequently disclosed that Weston remained eager to pursue her.

Why does Commander Weston still wish to marry Agnes?

It is heavily implied that Weston still wants to marry Agnes because he plans on violently “disciplining” her into submission.

In a flashback scene, viewers discover that Weston previously worked in cryptocurrency before joining Gilead. We also learn that he had multiple restraining orders taken out against him for domestic violence.

Paula appears to hint at Weston’s sinister plans in a one-to-one chat towards the end of the episode.

“It seems Commander Weston likes a challenge,” she states. “He still wants you. Men like that enjoy a stubborn spirit. It’s no fun breaking in a horse that’s docile.”

Whether he will harm Agnes remains to be seen, but his history raises serious concerns for whichever woman he ultimately ends up marrying.
