Outlander will be returning for an eighth and final season!
The hit Starz series recently ended it’s seventh season, and the next one has been already filmed.
Stars from the series marked the ending of filming on season eight back in September 2024 after being in production for most of the year.
Ahead of the final season, we’re taking a look at which stars are returning for the upcoming final season and who has been announced to join the cast.
tlander spans the genres of romance, science-fiction, history and adventure in one epic tale. It follows the story of Claire Randall, a married combat nurse from 1945, who is mysteriously swept back in time to 1743 Scotland. When forced to marry Jamie Fraser, a chivalrous young Scottish warrior, Claire’s heart is torn between two vastly different men in two irreconcilable lives.
At the time of this post, we currently do not have a release date for season eight, but stay tuned as more details are announced by Starz!
If you didn’t know, a new prequel series is coming out, Outlander: Blood of My Blood, and a teaser has been released. The new show will premiere on the network in the summer.
Kristin Atherton – LEAVING
Kristin Atherton will not be returning for the upcoming final season. The showrunner confirmed that her character Jenny Fraser Murray will not be in season eight after she said no to Jamie’s invite to North Carolina at the end of season seven.
If you forgot, Jenny was also previously played by Laura Donnelly.
Tobias Menzies – NOT RETURNING
Tobias Menzies has confirmed that he will NOT be back for the final season.
This may not come as a surprise to fans as both of Tobias‘ characters have been dead since season three (Black Jack) and four (Frank), and he has not appeared on the show since the middle of season four.
Caitriona Balfe – RETURNING
Caitriona Balfe will no doubt be reprising her role as Claire Fraser.
John Bell – RETURNING
John Bell, who joined the cast in season three, will once again reprise his role of Ian Fraser Murray.
David Berry – RETURNING
David Berry joined the Outlander cast in season three and is reprising his role of Lord John Grey.
César Domboy – RETURNING
César Domboy portrayed Fergus Claudel Fraser in a recurring capacity on the series. From 2017 to present, he’s appeared in 20 episodes of the series.
Paul Gorman – RETURNING
Paul Gorman joined the cast in season five, and has portrayed identical twin brothers Keziah and Josiah Beardsley. He is set to return to the show for the final season.
Sam Heughan – RETURNING
Sam Heughan will, of course, reprise his role as James “Jamie” Fraser.
Gary Lamont – RETURNING
Gary Lamont will reprise his role as Evan Lindsay. The actor first joined in season five and has made several appearances since.
Lauren Lyle – RETURNING
Lauren Lyle portrayed Marsali MacKimmie in a recurring capacity on Outlander. From 2017 to 2022, she appeared in 25 episodes of the show.

Dairmaid Murtagh, who joined the cast in season seven, will be reprising his role as William “Buck” MacKenzie in season eight
Caitlin O’Ryan – RETURNING
Caitlin O’Ryan, who joined in season four, is set to reprise her role of Lizzie Wemyss.
Joey Phillips – RETURNING
Joey Phillips joined the cast in season seven, as Dr. Denzell Hunter, and will reprise his role for season eight.
Sophie Skelton – RETURNING
Sophie Skelton is all set to return as Brianna “Bree” Fraser MacKenzie for the final season.
Charles Vandervaart – RETURNING
Charles Vandervaart is set to reprise his role of William Ransom, after joining the cast in season seven.
Kieran Bew – JOINING
Kieran Bew has joined the cast of the final season in the role of Captain Charles Cunningham, who is a retired British soldier.
Frances Tomelty – JOINING
Frances Tomelty joins the season eight cast as Captain Charles Cunningham’s mother, Elspeth Cunningham.
Carla Woodcock – JOINING
Carla Woodcock is joining the cast, where she will play Amaranthus Grey, a new member of the Grey family.
