The official trailer for the second season of Starz’s prequel series Outlander: Blood of My Blood signals an intense turn of events. Moving into the early 1700s in Scotland, the upcoming season centers heavily around the outbreak of the 1715 Jacobite Rising, a conflict that deeply divides the Scottish Highlands and forces local clans into open warfare.
The story continues to follow two parallel romantic arcs: the parents of Jamie Fraser—Brian Fraser and Ellen MacKenzie—and the parents of Claire Beauchamp—Henry and Julia Beauchamp. As clan politics escalate and the calls to arms ring out, both couples find themselves geographically and emotionally separated. Brian must return alongside his cousin Murtagh to Castle Leathers to stand with his father, Lord Lovat, while Ellen works at Castle Leoch to navigate internal family disputes between her brothers, Colum and Dougal, in an effort to safeguard Clan MacKenzie. Meanwhile, Henry and Julia’s attempts to navigate time travel back to their own era fall apart, stranding them in separate, perilous circumstances.
The series cast includes Jeremy Irvine and Hermione Corfield as Henry and Julia, Jamie Roy and Harriet Slater as Brian and Ellen, alongside Tony Curran as Simon Fraser, Lord Lovat, Séamus McLean Ross as Colum MacKenzie, Sam Retford as Dougal MacKenzie, Rory Alexander as Murtagh Fitzgibbons Fraser, and Conor MacNeill as Ned Gowan.
Musical Tradition: “The Skye Boat Song” vs. “Blood of My Blood – For My Love That’s Lost”
The musical identity of the Outlander universe has long been anchored by its main theme. In the original Outlander series, composer Bear McCreary adapted the traditional 19th-century Scottish folk tune “The Skye Boat Song” into the iconic main title theme. Originally sung by Raya Yarbrough, the piece uses traditional Highland instrumentation to ground the series in historical romanticism.
For the prequel Outlander: Blood of My Blood, McCreary composed a distinct original theme titled “Blood of My Blood – For My Love That’s Lost,” performed in collaboration with Scottish folk vocalist Julie Fowlis.
Performance and Compositional Analysis
While “The Skye Boat Song” relies on a familiar, swaying lullaby cadence to evoke nostalgia and dislocation across time, “Blood of My Blood – For My Love That’s Lost” leans into a more melancholic, ancestral tone.
McCreary pairs authentic Highland instruments—such as the pennywhistle, fiddle, and Great Highland bagpipes—with a symphonic string arrangement.Julie Fowlis’s vocal delivery anchors the piece, shifting seamlessly between English lyrics and traditional Scottish Gaelic verses. Her understated, haunting vocal style delivers the opening lines (“Long the way, o’er the bridge I crossed / For my love, for my love that’s lost”) with a quiet solemnity.
Rather than relying on grand orchestral swells, the theme relies on rhythmic bodhrán drumming and slow, sustained bow strokes on the fiddle to generate tension. The arrangement reflects the tragic backdrop of the 1715 uprising, balancing a sense of personal romance with the looming historical catastrophe that defines both generations of the Fraser and Beauchamp families.
Season 2 of Outlander: Blood of My Blood premieres on Friday, September 18, with weekly episodes airing exclusively on Starz.
