Sam Heughan has reflected on working alongside Caitríona Balfe during the production of Outlander Season 6, praising his longtime co-star for continuing to film while expecting her first child.
Balfe, who plays Claire Fraser in the hit historical drama, was pregnant during much of the season’s production. According to Heughan, the cast and crew had to make significant adjustments behind the scenes to accommodate her pregnancy while keeping filming on schedule.

Speaking during an appearance at Wizard World, Heughan said he was impressed by Balfe’s dedication throughout the challenging shoot, which took place during the COVID-19 pandemic.
He described Balfe’s performance as remarkable, noting that she continued working through difficult circumstances while preparing to welcome her child.
One of the biggest production challenges, Heughan revealed, was concealing Balfe’s growing baby bump on screen. As her pregnancy progressed, the team was forced to reorganize filming plans and complete certain scenes earlier than originally intended.
According to the actor, producers quickly adjusted the shooting schedule once they became aware of the situation, ensuring that Balfe’s scenes could be completed before her pregnancy became too noticeable for the cameras.

The changes also meant filming episodes out of sequence. Heughan explained that the cast moved between different episodes throughout production and later returned to shoot additional scenes and reshoots as needed.
Despite the logistical hurdles, the production successfully completed the season, with viewers largely unaware of the extensive planning that took place behind the scenes.
Balfe welcomed her first child in 2021, and her pregnancy remained largely hidden throughout Outlander Season 6 thanks to creative camera angles, costume choices and careful scheduling.
Heughan’s comments offer fans a glimpse into the challenges faced during the making of the season and highlight the commitment Balfe brought to the role during a particularly demanding period.
