Fans of sweeping historical drama, timeless romance, and stirring orchestral music are in for an extraordinary experience. On Thursday, October 15, Dayton Live is presenting Outlander in Concert: Echoes Through the Highlands at the historic Victoria Theatre. Designed in direct collaboration with series showrunner Matthew B. Roberts, this captivating symphonic event combines the visual grandeur of the beloved screen series with the soaring live performance of an elite orchestra and guest vocalists.
A Musical Odyssey: Reliving Eight Seasons of Love, Loss, and Highland Heritage
First brought to global acclaim through Diana Gabaldon’s bestselling novel series—which has sold over 50 million copies worldwide—Outlander captured the hearts of millions as a hit television series running for eight seasons from 2014 to 2026. The epic story follows Claire Fraser (Caitríona Balfe), a WWII combat nurse who travels through the ancient standing stones of Craigh na Dun into 18th-century Scotland, where she forms an enduring love with Highland warrior Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan). Across eight seasons, their journey takes them from the rugged Scottish Highlands to the elegant streets of Paris, the tropical Caribbean, and the rugged frontier of colonial North Carolina.
Now, Outlander in Concert brings this journey to life on stage. Featuring cinema-sized screens showcasing super-cut scenes from across all eight seasons—including exclusive footage from the final season—the show guides the audience through the emotional highs and dramatic twists of Claire and Jamie’s story. Co-curated by Roberts and award-winning series composer Bear McCreary, the setlist blends iconic romantic cues, such as the fan-favorite Season 1 wedding scene, with fast-paced, high-energy musical “bangers” in the second act.

Authentic Celtic Soundscapes, Heritage Instrumentation, and Iconic Streaming Hits
The musical backbone of the concert rests upon the score by Bear McCreary, whose distinguished career also includes composing for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power and the God of War video game franchise. The Outlander musical franchise stands as the best-selling title in Sony Pictures Television’s entire music catalog, accumulating over 500 million streams across seven soundtrack albums. Its beloved opening theme, “Outlander – The Skye Boat Song,” alone accounts for over 49 million plays worldwide.
To recreate the authentic atmosphere of the franchise, the touring production features traditional folk instrumentation, including live bagpipers, whistle players, fiddles, and the hurdy-gurdy. Musical Director and Conductor Heidi Joosten—a Jeff Award-winning conductor, composer, and educator with over 125 theatrical and concert credits—emphasizes the meticulous care McCreary took to ensure every musical arrangement authentically reflects the diverse settings of the characters’ travels.

Joosten, who leads the podium as part of a growing wave of prominent female conductors on major national tours, views the concert as an emotional, unifying experience for fans and newcomers alike. She notes that while many viewers discovered Outlander during the pandemic as a source of hope and community, the concert’s heartfelt themes of love, homecoming, and resilience resonate universally—offering an immersive, screen-free evening of live artistic connection.
