Lioness ended Season 3 with a major surprise that could reshape the story if the series returns for a fourth season.
Fans spent much of Season 3 trying to figure out who was behind Joe’s (Zoe Saldaña) kidnapping. Taylor Sheridan’s CIA drama followed the team as they worked to rescue their fellow agent, who was abducted in the premiere, while investigating a long list of possible suspects.
For most of the season, the team’s search seemed to lead nowhere. Then, the finale brought back a familiar face from the show’s past.
Stephanie Nur Returns as Aaliyah
Stephanie Nur, who played Aaliyah in Season 1, made a surprise appearance in the Season 3 finale.
Her return immediately gave the cliff-hanger a deeply personal connection to Joe. In the first season, Joe and her team destroyed Aaliyah’s life after killing both her father and her fiancé on suspicion of financing terrorism in the Middle East.
That history gave Aaliyah a clear reason to seek revenge against Joe. Her reveal as the person behind Joe’s kidnapping became one of the biggest twists of the season.
Even Nur herself was caught off guard by the idea.

The actress told Entertainment Weekly that when Sheridan called her, she initially assumed he wanted to discuss another series. She had previously worked with him, and because he often uses actors across different shows, she thought the call was unrelated to Lioness.
“I just assumed that he was calling me about a different show, because it had been three years,” Nur explained.
Instead, Sheridan presented his idea for bringing Aaliyah back for the finale.
Nur said she was “very surprised” by Aaliyah’s return, while also feeling honored and happy to revisit a character she remains deeply attached to.
Will Aaliyah Return for Season 4?
More than 7 million viewers watched the Season 3 premiere during its first week, although Paramount has not yet disclosed how many viewers remained through the finale.

Despite the strong response, Lioness has not officially been renewed for Season 4. That leaves the show’s biggest unanswered question hanging in the air: what happens to Aaliyah after the finale?
Nur has made it clear that she would like the opportunity to continue the character’s story.
“Selfishly, I care about her,” the actress said. “So I want her to have the best outcome that she can have, and I’m sure Taylor will write that, whatever it is.”
She also suggested that Aaliyah deserves the possibility of redemption.
“Every woman wants a redemption story,” Nur said.

For now, the fate of Lioness remains uncertain. If Paramount brings the series back for Season 4, Aaliyah’s return has already created a major storyline for the show to explore.
