The Last of Us star Kaitlyn Dever has shed a little more light on what will be an “intense” season three for her character Abby.

Warning: Spoilers for episode seven of The Last of Us season two ahead.

Season two of The Last of Us ended dramatically earlier this week with Abby raising her gun and shooting towards Ellie (Bella Ramsey), after Ellie’s search for Abby saw a few of the latter’s cronies dead.

As Abby pulled the trigger, the screen cut to black. A time jump then occurred, transporting viewers back to Abby’s whereabouts on Ellie’s first day in Seattle.

Abby wakes up in a survivors’ camp in a Seattle sports centre, surrounded by more of her comrades, with the text “Seattle: Day One” appearing on screen.

The flashback sets the scene for The Last of Us season three, which is looking likely to feature a lot less Ellie, and bring Abby’s viewpoint to the forefront.

“I think I’ll be in it a lot,” Dever confirmed to British GQ recently of season three.

While the Apple Cider Vinegar star couldn’t say much about the upcoming third installment, she did reveal that filming would not be beginning as soon as this summer, unlike some online rumours have suggested.

“I think [showrunner] Craig [Mazin] is still trying to write the season,” she explained.

“I have no idea what their plans are. Craig says it’s even more intense than season two, which I don’t know how… [But] that’s all he told me.”

Will Ellie be in The Last of Us season three?

Fans of the original The Last of Us Naughty Dog games will have an idea of what’s in store for Ellie and Abby in season three.

In the The Last of Us Part II game, players switch characters from Ellie to Abby, and are forced to understand the controversial character’s stance. Therefore season three is likely to be told largely from Abby’s perspective.

Recently, Bella Ramsey and co-creators Mazin and Neil Druckmann seemed to confirm as much.

Speaking to Variety, the 21-year-old said that they would “most likely” have a smaller role in season three.

“I haven’t seen any scripts, but yes, I do expect [to have a smaller part],” the 21-year-old actor said.

“I think that I’m going to be there, but not a whole bunch. We’ve had conversations about that. I sort of have a rough idea of what it’s going to be, but I can’t tell you.”

At a press conference ahead of season two’s finale, the co-creators hinted that Ellie might not appear on screen in the series at all.

“Even if I thought I knew now exactly how it was going to go, I’m experienced enough to know that two weeks from now we may have a different idea of how it should go,” Mazin explained.

“All I can say is we haven’t seen the last of Kaitlyn Dever and we haven’t seen the last of Bella Ramsey, and we haven’t seen the last of Isabela Merced, and we haven’t seen the last of a lot of people who are currently dead in the story.”

Druckman added: “Whether you will see them on screen or not [in season three], their presence will be there throughout.”
