The Game of Thrones franchise is officially heading to the big screen, with Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest set to arrive in theaters in 2029.

Directed by Owen Harris, who is also working on A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, and written by Beau Willimon of House of Cards, the film will be released by Warner Bros. Pictures on June 1, 2029.

While Warner Bros. has not yet revealed the movie’s official plot details, its title points directly to one of the most important chapters in Westerosi history: the rise of Aegon I Targaryen, better known as Aegon the Conqueror.

Aegon the Conqueror Comes to the Big Screen

Aegon flew from Old Valyria on dragonback with his forces and embarked on the campaign that would ultimately unite the kingdoms of Westeros under Targaryen rule.

He became the first Lord of the Seven Kingdoms and forged the Iron Throne from the swords of his defeated enemies.

Aegon was accompanied by his two sisters, Visenya and Rhaenys, who also became his wives. According to George R. R. Martin’s books, Aegon married Visenya out of duty and Rhaenys out of desire.

The trio also rode three legendary dragons. Aegon rode Balerion the Black Dread, while Visenya rode Vhagar and Rhaenys rode Meraxes.

Vhagar later became one of the most prominent dragons in House of the Dragon, where the massive creature is ridden by Prince Aemond Targaryen, played by Ewan Mitchell.

The Story Connects to ‘House of the Dragon’

Aegon’s Conquest will explore events that take place long before the main Game of Thrones story.

Members of House Targaryen and House Velaryon had fled Old Valyria following the Doom, the catastrophic destruction that devastated the ancient civilization and its surrounding peninsula.

House of the Dragon has already provided viewers with additional context about Aegon’s conquest.

In Season 1, the late King Viserys, played by Paddy Considine, revealed that Aegon had experienced a prophetic vision known as “A Song of Ice and Fire.”

In that vision, Aegon saw a devastating winter coming from the north that could consume all life. He believed that Westeros needed to be united under a Targaryen ruler with access to dragonfire if humanity was to survive the coming threat.

The prophecy eventually became connected to the White Walkers and the events of Game of Thrones.

‘Game of Thrones’ Will Have a New Release Every Year

The 2029 release also fits HBO’s current plan to keep the franchise active with at least one major Game of Thrones project each year.

The second season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is scheduled for 2027, followed by the fourth and final season of House of the Dragon in 2028.

Then, in 2029, Aegon’s Conquest will bring the franchise to theaters.

The movie is the first officially announced Game of Thrones theatrical project following years of discussions about bringing the franchise to the big screen.

From a TV Project to a Movie

'Game of Thrones' Movie 'Aegon's Conquest' Sets Summer 2029 Release Date

Aegon’s Conquest has previously been developed as a potential television project.

Writer Mattson Tomlin, known for The Batman Part II and Terminator Zero, had been working on a TV treatment based on Aegon’s story. That project is now presumed to no longer be moving forward following the movie announcement.

The idea of a Game of Thrones movie has also been around for years. Original series creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss had previously hoped to produce a theatrical film connected to the final season of the HBO series, although those plans never materialized.

HBO officially confirmed that a Game of Thrones movie was in development in 2024, with further details emerging gradually.

Now, the story of Westeros’ first Targaryen conqueror has an official theatrical date: June 1, 2029.
