Game Of Thrones And House Of The Dragon Stars Emilia Clarke And Emma D’Arcy Share A Surprise Emmys Reunion

Game of Thrones Season 7 Episode 3 Emilia Clarke as Daenerys Targaryen; House of the Dragon Season 1 - Episode 10 Emma D'Arcy as Rhaenyra

The Targaryen dynasty made an unexpected return to the Emmys as Emilia Clarke and Emma D’Arcy reunited onstage during the 2026 ceremony.

The actors, who played two generations of the powerful dragon-riding family, joined forces to present the award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie, ultimately handing the honor to Sally Field.

For Game of Thrones fans, the reunion offered a fun connection between HBO’s original fantasy series and its prequel, House of the Dragon.

Daenerys And Rhaenyra Meet In The Emmys Spotlight

D’Arcy kicked off the segment by acknowledging the unusual family connection between their characters.

“In the Game of Thrones universe, Emilia is my great-great-great-great-really-great-granddaughter,” D’Arcy joked.

The presentation also featured some High Valyrian, the fictional language associated with House Targaryen.

Clarke became one of television’s biggest stars through her role as Daenerys Targaryen, the Mother of Dragons, throughout Game of Thrones. D’Arcy later carried the Targaryen legacy into House of the Dragon as Rhaenyra Targaryen, a character whose story takes place roughly two centuries before the events of the original series.

D’Arcy then announced that Clarke would introduce the winner of the category in High Valyrian.

The camera also captured Game of Thrones co-creator David Benioff watching Clarke deliver the line, adding another layer to the franchise reunion.

Fans Have Long Compared Their Targaryen Characters

Although Daenerys and Rhaenyra come from different generations, fans have frequently drawn parallels between the two characters.

Both are women from the Targaryen dynasty who attempt to claim leadership while navigating the complicated legacy of their family. Their stories also involve the infamous Targaryen reputation for instability and “madness.”

D’Arcy, however, has been careful not to treat the characters as interchangeable.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, D’Arcy explained that Rhaenyra’s development is shaped by circumstances specific to her own story.

The actor said they wanted to preserve the character’s different possible paths for as long as possible, particularly as Rhaenyra continues weighing different approaches to leadership and responding to advice from the people around her.

Emilia Clarke Helped D’Arcy Prepare For The Franchise

The two actors had actually met before House of the Dragon Season 1 began filming.

D’Arcy recalled that Clarke was extremely welcoming and offered generous advice about taking on such a major franchise.

According to D’Arcy, much of Clarke’s guidance focused on what it means to become one of the recognizable faces of a huge television series, as well as how to manage the demands of working on a production of that scale for extended periods.

D’Arcy described the advice as pragmatic and very useful, particularly when preparing to step into the world of Game of Thrones as a new Targaryen lead.

While Clarke’s Daenerys story has already concluded, D’Arcy’s journey as Rhaenyra is still unfolding.

House of the Dragon is set to end with its fourth and final season. Production is scheduled to begin in 2027, with the final season expected to premiere in 2028.

For one night at the Emmys, however, two generations of Targaryen royalty were together again — giving Game of Thrones fans a reunion that felt right at home in the world of dragons, dynasties and High Valyrian.
