Dutton Ranch is preparing for a major change in Season 2, with Ed Harris’ Everett McKinney set to take on a much larger role as the series expands beyond Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler.
The Taylor Sheridan series has largely functioned as a continuation of Yellowstone through its first season, with Kelly Reilly’s Beth and Cole Hauser’s Rip at the center of the story. Their move to Texas, their conflict with the 10 Petals, and the fate of their adopted son Carter have driven much of the season’s narrative.
That is set to change in Season 2.
According to comments from Reilly, Everett will become one of the central figures of the series, signaling a broader approach to the story while Beth and Rip remain part of the cast.
Ed Harris’ Everett Will Have a Bigger Role
Reilly recently indicated that Season 2 will feel much more like Ed Harris’ show.
“I think Season 2 is going to feel very much more like Ed [Harris]’s show,” Reilly said. “This is not the Beth and Rip show. This is Dutton Ranch, and there are four lead characters, five.”
Hauser has also spoken positively about Harris’ expanded role. He noted that the veteran actor was used relatively sparingly during Season 1 and said he was looking forward to working with him more.
“We’re going to make sure that he is a big part of helping us move forward in whatever capacity,” Hauser said.
Rather than completely removing Beth and Rip from the story, the change appears to signal a move toward a larger ensemble.
Everett’s Story Is Already Connected to the Main Conflict
Everett was already involved in one of Season 1’s major developments.
His relationship with Beulah Jackson, played by Annette Bening, came to an abrupt end after he discovered that she was involved in drug smuggling.
By the end of the season, Everett had joined Beth and Rip in defending their ranch.
That leaves him well positioned to become more deeply involved in the conflict with Mariano and the cartel in Season 2. His combat experience from Vietnam could also become an important part of the character’s story as the stakes increase.
At the same time, Beth and Rip are not disappearing.
The shift appears to be less about replacing them and more about giving other characters enough space to carry their own storylines.
‘Dutton Ranch’ Could Become More Like ‘Yellowstone’

The expanded focus could bring Dutton Ranch closer to the structure that made Yellowstone such a sprawling family drama.
Although John Dutton was the head of the Dutton family, Yellowstone rarely depended entirely on one character. Beth, Kayce, Jamie, Rip, Chief Rainwater and the ranch hands all had storylines that developed alongside the central conflict.
Dutton Ranch Season 1, by comparison, placed much greater emphasis on Beth and Rip.
Season 2 appears ready to broaden that approach.
With Everett receiving more screen time, the series could also explore characters such as Azul and Zachariah while continuing Beth and Rip’s storyline.
The result could be a more interconnected ensemble rather than a story revolving primarily around two characters.
Beth and Rip Still Have a Place in Season 2
Despite the change in focus, there is no indication that Beth and Rip are being written out of the series.
Their story remains one of the major threads established during Season 1, particularly following the cliffhanger involving their adopted son Carter and his abduction by Mariano.
Instead, Season 2 appears set to give the couple more company at the center of the narrative.
That could allow the show to develop several conflicts simultaneously while giving supporting characters more substantial arcs.
The change also comes amid other creative developments behind the scenes. Dutton Ranch has a new showrunner, while Sheridan is taking a more hands-on role in writing Season 2 after previously working primarily as a producer.
Season 2 Could Mark a New Chapter for the ‘Yellowstone’ Universe
The expansion of the ensemble could represent an important shift for Dutton Ranch.
The series is part of Sheridan’s increasingly large television universe, which also includes shows such as Landman, Tulsa King, Mayor of Kingstown and Lioness, alongside the growing Yellowstone franchise.

Season 2 is currently expected in mid-2027.
For viewers who became invested in Beth and Rip during the first season, the shift means their stories may no longer dominate every major development. But Everett’s expanded role opens the door for the series to explore a wider group of characters and conflicts.
If Season 2 follows through on Reilly’s comments, Dutton Ranch could be moving away from its identity as primarily a Beth-and-Rip continuation of Yellowstone and toward a broader ensemble drama of its own.
