Benito Skinner teases chaos, backslides, and uncomfortable truths for queer coming-of-age comedy’s next chapter

Benito Skinner drew inspiration from his time as a gay college student for Overcompensatingjpg

Having binged Overcompensating season one already we’re desperate for updates about the future and thankfully Benito Skinner has some.

The series’ writer and star, known beforehand for his social media presence, has been sharing what ideas he has for a potential second season, should it get the green light.

Sitting down with Deadline to go over all things Overcompensating, Skinner was asked about season two.

“What’s interesting to me about this idea of overcompensation with these characters is that at no point do you stop doing that completely,” he said.

“I’m really inspired by the thought that if anyone has a comfort in it, or a comfort blanket, we take it away. I want to see them start over in a lot of ways, and I think that’s what that ending tells you might happen.

He then added: “Now some truths are out there, but I don’t think you stop overcompensating even when the truth is [out] there, too.”

The first season of the new and popular LGBTQ+ show saw Skinner play the semi-autobiographical character Benny, a closeted gay college student who stumbles his way through first year while navigating exploring his sexuality and impressing the school’s jock-in-chief, Peter (Adam DiMarco).

There are many other hijinks along the way with a Mount Everest-sized cliffhanger very much leaving the door open for season two.

Skinner also spoke to Variety about a potential second season, indicating he was “ready to go.”

He told the entertainment industry bible, “There will be backslide, and that’s what that finale is. This journey of becoming yourself and overcompensating, it’s a rollercoaster and at times I think college can be so selfish and you can be like, it’s every man for himself.

“It’s drugs and alcohol and feelings and we didn’t want to stray from that, and we want to continue it.”

However, DiMarco went further describing Skinners’s plans for a second outing as “unhinged” and “insane.”

“I know what Benny has planned for season two if we get one, and it’s insane, it’s so good. I wish I could tell you,” he teased.

Since its release on Prime Video on 15 May, Overcompensating has proven a hit with critics and audiences alike. As well as Skinner and DiMarco, the show also features the talents of Mary Beth Barone and guest appearances from the likes of Bowen Yang, Matt Rogers, Lukas Gage, and Charli XCX.

Speaking to PinkNews recently, Skinner reflected on the chance to work with his “friend” during the height of her commercial success.

“I think this summer was this like unbelievable moment where I got to shoot this show that has been my dream and my entire life for six years, and meanwhile one of my best friends is finally getting the flowers that she has deserved for 10 plus years,” Skinner said.

Overcompensating is streaming now on Prime Video.
