Today, BDSM stands for: Boy, Do (I Wanna See that) Skarsgård Movie.

The kinky, gay dom/sub film Pillion premiered at the Cannes International Film Festival over the weekend and caused quite a media uproar. The buzz came not only for the contents of the film, but for the celebrity happenings around it, as well — Alexander Skarsgård in leather pants! Kissing Pedro Pascal! A pup hood!? The film, which includes some intense and explicit sex scenes, has also been described as “delightfully tender” by The Daily Beast. Here’s everything we know about the project!

What is Pillion about?

The film, which was first announced last May, stars Skarsgård as Ray, the head of a motorbike club, who takes on a wallflower named Colin (Harry Melling) as a submissive partner. (A pillion is a term for the passenger seat on a motorcycle, usually positioned behind the driver.) Ray takes Colin away from his “dreary suburban life” and brings him into the queer and kinky world of biking, “taking all sorts of virginities along the way”— in an interview on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Skarsgård explained Colin as “kind of my boyfriend slash sex slave slash butler” and promised naked wrestling. Of course, because the film needs a conflict, as Colin goes deeper into that world, he begins to question whether “the life of a 24/7 submissive is for him.”

While a pillion is by definition the passenger seat on a motorcycle, it takes on other meaning in the contexts of biker clubs and a dom/sub relationship. To “ride pillion” is to ride in the pillion seat which is seen as a version of submission as the passenger is giving up control of the bike to the driver. As such, pillion is also used as a label for a submissive.

Who else is in Pillion?

Aside from starring Skarsgård, Pillion also stars Melling, who has been featured in The Queen’s Gambit, but is probably most well-known for playing Dudley Dursley in the Harry Potter film series as a child. The film also features the Scissor Sisters’ Jake Shears in his acting debut; he plays a supporting role as a sub who has an NSFW sexual encounter with Skarsgård on a picnic table, per Deadline. (To extend the gay madlibs a bit, the scene also features a penis prosthetic with a Prince Albert piercing.)

The cast, according to IMDB, also includes out gay biker Paul Tallis, who per his own Instagram, was the wearer of the pup hood at the premiere. According to Tallis, he had the “pleasure of educating Harry Melling on being a sub and demonstrating how to lick boots,” for the film. Melling also rode in the pillion seat on Tallis’s bike from London to Cambridge Pride.

Who is the team behind Pillion?

Film buffs, rejoice. Everyone’s favorite independent studio, A24, acquired Pillion in October, per Variety. The movie studio routinely puts out queer favorites, including MaXXXine, Luca Guadagnino’s Queer and Academy Award for Best Picture winner Everything Everywhere All at Once.

Pillion is directed by Harry Lighton, an out queer director who has previously helmed the short film Wren Boys, which was nominated for BAFTA award for best British short film. Wren Boys was about a gay marriage taking place in a men’s prison. While introducing the film at Cannes, Lighton said, “I hope the film makes you laugh, I hope it makes you think and feel and maybe I hope it makes some of you a little bit horny — or a lot, let’s see.”

OK, so what is this I heard about Alexander Skarsgård wearing leather to the premiere?

As was visible in the video where Lighton introduced the film, Skarsgård wore leather pants to the film’s festival premiere, as well as a pair of leather biker boots from Loewe, per WWD. Later, while attending the premiere of the film The Phoenician Scheme, Skarsgård upped the ante and wore a pair of thigh-high Saint Laurent fetish boots.

Both boots were certainly popular on social media.

“Alexander Skarsgård wearing leather pants for the premiere of his new queer film….i’m obsessed with this man you don’t understand,” one person wrote.

“Love this crazy chica,” another wrote. “A real freak in a sea of posers.”

Commenting on his Saint Laurent boots, yet another person wrote, “I love his freak ass.”

Alongside the boots he wore to the Pillion premiere, he wore a simple white vintage t-shirt that included a kinky BDSM tableau of a sub under a dom’s boot from Jerks in London, per WWD.

I also heard that Alexander Skarsgård and Pedro Pascal kissed at the premiere. Is that true?

Oh boy, if you haven’t seen them yet, I have to be honest, I’m not sure you’re ready. The internet’s boyfriend Pedro Pascal was in attendance at the Pillion premiere and, after the film’s standing ovation, Pascal and Skarsgård embraced and shared a small, sweet kiss.

While the kiss went super viral, some further internet sleuthing (and a different camera angle) did confirm that the smooch was on the cheek.

OK, let’s back it up. This happened during an ovation? What has the reception been like for Pillion?

Yes, you heard that right. While a kiss from Pedro Pascal is one indication of a successful film, the other is the seven-minute standing ovation that the film received at its premiere, per The Hollywood Reporter. (That said, to play devil’s advocate, the accuracy and worthiness of a standing ovation has recently been called into question by the same magazine.)

When will Pillion be released?

I know, I know, I want to see it, too. While watching the film isn’t guaranteed to get you a smooch from Skarsgård or a hug from a guy in a pup hood, it does sound good. That said, while the film has premiered at Cannes, it does not yet have an official release date.

Sorry, you’ll have to wait, but in the kink world, that’s just called edging.
