The emotional lingering presence of John Dutton continues to loom large over Kayce Dutton in Season 2, Episode 2 of Marshals, as the former navy SEAL struggles to balance fatherhood while avoiding the dark legacy of his family’s past. Showrunner Spencer Hudnut revealed to TVLine that Kayce (Luke Grimes) remains deeply conflicted about whether to ever tell his 17-year-old son, Tate, the complicated truth about his grandfather.

Hudnut noted that as Kayce experiences the daily hardships of single parenting, he gains an unexpected understanding of John’s past struggles. However, because Tate has already endured massive trauma, Kayce refuses to tear down the memory of one of his son’s primary heroes. The showrunner warned that viewers should expect mounting father-son tension as Tate approaches his 18th birthday believing he is ready for full manhood.

The episode also delivered significant character developments for the rest of the team. Encouraged by Belle, Pete “Cal” Calvin (Logan Marshall-Green) formally disclosed his cancer diagnosis to his fellow Marshals in a quiet, matter-of-fact moment. Meanwhile, Andrea Cruz (Ash Santos) began digging into cold case files concerning her father, a police officer killed in the line of duty. Hudnut teased that Andrea’s quest for closure and personal vengeance following the traumatic events of Season 1 will soon take her and Kayce far beyond Montana on an investigative assignment in New York City.
