Bridgerton Fans Are Split Over the Next Lead — But This Choice Was Almost Inevitable

There’s nothing I love more than waking up to news about Bridgerton. We’re fresh off the conclusion of Season 4, where we were left swooning over Yerin Ha and Luke Thompson as Sophie Baek and Benedict Bridgerton and, honestly, there’s been a kite-shaped hole in our hearts ever since. Benophie forever!

But if you’re feeling the Bridgerton blues, like me, I’ve got just the thing to perk you up. Because we already have something to look forward to next season. Just last night, Netflix made an exciting announcement — one that answers the long-awaited question that’s been circulating all season — who will be the lead of Bridgerton Season 5? Will it be Eloise or Francesca?

Well, lucky for us, Netflix has decided to put us out of our misery and confirmed that it will be… drum roll please… Francesca Bridgerton! Season 5 of Bridgerton, which is now in production, will follow the love story of Francesca and Michaela Stirling.

For context, in Julia Quinn’s When He Was Wicked, on which the season will be based, Francesca seeks to reclaim her life and eventually find a new companion to start a family following the death of her husband, John Stirling.

The plot centres on her complex relationship with Michael Stirling — now Michaela in the show — John’s cousin and best friend, who has been secretly in love with Francesca since the day they met. Years of repressed longing and shared grief culminate in a high-tension romance that explores themes of second chances and the guilt of moving on.

For those of us who watched the previous season, it comes as no surprise that Francesca has been named our new leading lady. I mean, we literally already saw the first half of her story play out in Season 4 in her relationship with John, his death, her mourning and the beginnings of a friendship with Michaela. I, for one, cannot wait to see what happens next.

But not everyone was quite as ecstatic about the news. Many online have expressed disappointment that Eloise wasn’t the chosen one this time around.

“Bummer. Was really hoping for Eloise,” one user commented on the Instagram announcement.

“Disappointed. We have to wait for Eloise’s season in the next one,” another wrote.

While I understand the inevitable fan grievances and the desire to play favourites when it comes to the Bridgerton children, there are some very key reasons why the Season 5 lead was always going to be Francesca. Hear me out.

Francesca and Michaela Bridgerton

The most obvious reason is the setup. Unlike Eloise, Francesca’s romantic journey has been very clearly laid out for us over the past couple of seasons. We’ve had time to get to know all the main players in her story arc, including John, Michaela, and, of course, Francesca herself. Her Season 4 narrative started off with her discovering physical pleasure and struggling to find that ‘pinnacle’. Then the focus shifted to conception and pressure around fertility. And then, of course, John dies, and suddenly her entire storyline pivots to grief.

By the end of Season 4, we’ve essentially got a character who is completely loaded with story potential. There are so many emotional and narrative threads ready to explore.

Even if we look at the press tour for Season 4, the signs were everywhere. Not only was actress Hannah Dodd, who plays Francesca, included in a lot of press interviews for the season, but she was consistently paired up with the Season 4 leads, Yerin Ha and Luke Thompson, for the junket.

And then there’s showrunner Jess Brownell’s very telling quotes. While promoting Season 4, Brownell spoke extensively about her desire to centre the show on a queer romance and the importance of that type of representation.

“You know, I think part of the reason [Bridgerton is] so beloved is because it’s an inclusive romantic fantasy. And to have sexuality be inclusive as well was really important to me. So, I’m really excited to have one of our main lead storylines be a queer storyline in the future,” Brownell told Pedestrian TV.

While Brownell’s commitment to LGBTQ+ representation has sparked plenty of excitement, it has also shifted the spotlight onto how the show chooses to sequence its remaining leads.

Transitioning to a queer-centered season represents a bold new chapter for the Ton, but there’s another clear reason the production might be playing the long game with the show’s lineup.

Now, it is no secret that Eloise and the hilarious woman who plays her, Claudia Jessie, are fan-favourites. The fandom loves her. And, because she is such a heavy hitter in terms of popularity, there’s a theory that Netflix is intentionally holding Eloise’s season in reserve as some sort of assurance.

By delaying her endgame, the showrunners ensure that a significant chunk of the audience stays tethered to the series for the long haul. Genius, really.

At the end of the day, whether you’re excited for Francesca’s love story or you’re an Eloise stan, there’s no denying that the future of the series is looking more vibrant than ever.

No matter what, we’re in for a high-stakes, emotionally resonant journey that proves Bridgerton still knows exactly how to keep us all coming back for more.
