Will June’s Bold Plan for Serena & Wharton Actually Work in The Handmaid’s Tale?

June has come up with a new plan for Serena Joy and Commander Wharton in The Handmaid’s Tale‘s final season, with many fans wondering if this long shot will actually work. Throughout The Handmaid’s Tale season 6, June was working with Mayday to carry out a major attack at Jezebel’s. Originally, Mayday wanted to kill many of the Commanders who frequented the brothel, dealing a major blow against Gilead. Unfortunately, Nick betrayed June and told Commander Wharton about the attack, with June learning this at the end of The Handmaid’s Tale season 6, episode 6.

The Handmaid’s Tale season 6, episode 7 opens in the immediate aftermath of this reveal, with the story following June as she deals with the fallout of Nick’s betrayal. Commander Wharton shuts down Jezebel’s and has the women inside of it executed. June and Mayday are at a loss for what to do next, as Gilead now seems undefeatable. However, a conversation with Commander Lawrence gives June one last idea, although it will be a long shot.

Why June Is Targeting Serena Joy’s Wedding To Commander Wharton

It Is The Perfect Replacement For Jezebel’s

While talking to Commander Lawrence, June learns that Serena Joy and Commander Wharton are planning a massive wedding, one that many Commanders and Handmaids will be at. This gives June an idea. Now that Mayday’s attack on Jezebel’s has failed, she believes that pivoting the attack to Serena Joy’s wedding is the best step forward. The amount of Commanders who will be present means that it is an even more valuable target than Jezebel’s ever was, and the Handmaids’ involvement makes Mayday’s chances of success even better.

On top of that, the notoriety of the wedding also means that it is a perfect target. Since the wedding is so high-profile, June and Lawrence believe that Serena Joy will have many of the Gileadean Guardians leave the border and come protect the wedding. This doesn’t matter since the Handmaids will be attacking from the inside. However, it also means that the border and Boston will be left open. The leftover Mayday bombs will be used to take out some big targets, with the United States military then having an opening to invade the country of Gilead.

How The Handmaids Will Be Used At Serena Joy & Commander Wharton’s Wedding

They Are Key To The Plan

The Handmaids are set to play a key role in Mayday’s attack on Serena Joy’s wedding, and this is thanks to their attire. For one, June likes that the Handmaids’ long robes and headpieces mean that they are essentially anonymous. One Handmaid can’t be told apart from another, meaning that any Handmaid can do anything without being caught.

On top of that, the long robes are perfect for smuggling things into the wedding. June plans on getting weapons to the Handmaids, presumably allowing them to attack the Commanders. One shot in The Handmaid’s Tale season 6, episode 7 shows June and Moira wrapping multiple knives in pieces of cloth. Since June has volunteered to smuggle the weapons into Gilead, she will probably deliver these knives to the Handmaids, with them then using their Handmaid outfits to conceal them.

Could Serena Joy Discover June’s Plan – And Would She Help Or Stop Her?

She Wouldn’t Let June Do It, Right?

Serena Joy is one of the biggest threats to this new plan, meaning that she is once again June’s main oppositional force. Since Serena Joy is overseeing the wedding’s preparations, any discrepancies are likely to be noticed by her. Thus, if June slips up, Serena Joy will probably be the first person to notice. As Lawrence says, the Commanders are most likely riding the high of the foiled Jezebel’s plan, meaning that their defenses are down. However, Serena knows better than to underestimate June and Mayday.

It is likely that Serena Joy will discover June’s plot. The real question has to do with whether Serena Joy would stop it. Serena Joy has been shown to engage in some treasonous acts before, with her even hiding June from her husband in episode 6. However, it is unlikely that Serena would allow June to turn her wedding into a slaughterhouse. Serena still seems to support Gilead enough to be against the Commanders’ deaths, especially if those deaths include her husband, Commander Wharton.

Will June’s Plan Mean Nick Has To Die?

June Won’t Give Him Knowledge Of The Attack

AD

June’s relationship with Nick is undoubtedly over after his big betrayal, as he cost the lives of all the women in Jezebel’s. Thus, it is incredibly unlikely that June would inform Nick of Mayday’s newest plan. Since Nick is probably going to be at Serena Joy’s wedding, this means that he would be a target of Mayday’s attack. Since the Handmaids will probably be killing any Commanders in sight, this makes Nick’s chances of survival slim.

The only way that Nick will survive the wedding, if he is in attendance, is if June protects him. Giving Nick knowledge of the attack is too risky, but June could tell the Handmaids not to hurt him once the attack starts. While June is upset with Nick, they have loved each other for years. It is possible that this love could come out during the attack, preventing June from killing him.

Is There Any Hope For June’s Wedding Plan To Succeed? What That Would Mean

June’s plan to attack Serena Joy’s wedding is risky, but it seems like a better plan than the Jezebel’s attack. Not only would this attack mean that a significant chunk of Gilead’s Commanders have been wiped out, but it also means that Gilead will be open for other attacks. As Lawrence and June said, the wedding is the perfect opportunity for the United States to invade Gilead’s borders. This would go a long way in weakening the country, allowing Mayday to score a major blow in the lead up to the finale of The Handmaid’s Tale.

What Happens If June’s Plan Fails Again?

It Could Be The End Of Mayday

If June’s plan does fail, this will most likely be the end of June’s attacks on Gilead. June seems to be planning on going to the wedding to distribute the knives. Thus, if Wharton’s reaction to this attack is anything like his reaction to the Jezebel’s plot, June will probably be killed. This second attack will also teach Gilead not to lower their defenses, making future Mayday attacks possible. This wedding attack is a huge gamble, as it will either destroy Gilead, or make it impenetrable for the rest of The Handmaid’s Tale.
