In season 8, episode 3 of Outlander, “Abies Fraseri,” Claire Fraser (Caitríona Balfe) inexplicably brings a newborn back to life. How did it happen? The answer may be hidden in plain sight.

Let’s recap. A woman in labor arrives at Claire and Jamie’s front door seeking urgent help. She’s carrying twins: the first baby is delivered without major complications, but the second is stillborn. Claire attempts CPR, but nothing seems to work. As she holds the baby, she sees a series of vivid flashes—memories from her near-death experience. She sees Master Raymond, wings beating, and an intense blue light. Just like that, the baby starts breathing.

Afterward, Claire tells Jamie that what she felt just before the child was revived was familiar: she had already experienced it when Master Raymond healed her in Paris. “A blue light… seeped… from my fingers into her body, and I felt her heart beat again,” she says in the episode.

Fans of the series may remember that Claire has already encountered similarly strange, almost mystical moments. For example, in season 5, episode 9, after Jamie nearly dies from a snakebite, she manages to revive him without any medical intervention.

Is Claire gaining control over some kind of power?

According to Caitríona Balfe, these moments are likely connected.

“From the very beginning, season 1, season 2, she’s touched skulls, she’s had intuitions, she’s had feelings. There’s always been an air of otherworldliness around her.” She told TVLine, adding with a laugh, “She can f**king time-travel, for God’s sake!”

Still, there wasn’t a unified interpretation behind the scenes. Showrunner Matthew B. Roberts leaned more toward the idea that these events aren’t something Claire can consciously control.

“My take is that maybe Claire’s a conduit,” he said. “If you’re not in control of something and you don’t know how to use it, then maybe you’re just the conduit to bring it out. That’s the way, in the story, for me, it plays out.”

Balfe, however, prefers a slightly different perspective. She believes Claire does possess some form of power, even if it’s difficult to define. To her, these moments seem tied to extreme circumstances, “times of absolute need.”

Ultimately, the ambiguity is intentional. As Roberts puts it, whether these moments stem from magic, a higher power, or something more universal is left open to the interpretation of viewers.

TV Show vs. Books: Claire’s blue light

For book readers, Claire’s true powers have been old news for years. We can find several references to supernatural healing powers all the way back in Dragonfly in Amber, the second book in the series, when Claire meets Master Raymond in Paris. He calls her “Madonna” for a blue aura that surrounds her, and for him, that’s a sign of her healing powers.

In the show, this “blueness” is depicted only in two scenes: when Master Raymond heals Claire in season 2 and when Claire revives the baby in season 8. Moreover, back in season 4, when Claire meets a Cherokee healer, Adawehi, she gives her a prophecy: when her hair is completely white, she will have wisdom that goes beyond time. In last week’s episode, Jamie tells her that her hair is the color of moonlight all around her face. Will she be able to better control her powers as her hair turns whiter and whiter?

But there’s another book variable that the show has not (yet) explored. In Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone, when Claire saves the baby, she does so by touching Jamie. It’s his emotional and physical strength that was essential to the channeling of Claire’s powers. What she used in that moment was their shared bond: she found Jamie’s spark of life and used it on the baby.

Did the show purposefully brush over this detail? It could explain or further deepen Claire and Jamie’s attraction to each other. After all, theirs is a bond that transcends the limits of time and space. Could it be that Claire has always possessed this power but didn’t have use for it until now?

We’re excited to see how this storyline will play out in season 8. As we gear towards the finale, hopefully all our questions will be answered.
