Becka’s life is changed forever in The Testaments. Thankfully, The Handmaid’s Tale spinoff is already renewed for Season 2, so the finale’s biggest questions will be answered. But it was a devastating final two hours for Mattea Conforti‘s character in Episodes 9 and 10. Conforti explains what happened with Becka, Agnes (Chase Infiniti), and Garth (Brad Alexander) in the last two episodes of the season in the video interview above, which was conducted before The Testaments was renewed for Season 2. Warning: Spoilers for The Testaments finale ahead!

Becka (Conforti) was arrested for the murder of her father in Episode 9, and Episode 10 showed the fallout. Her mother took the blame to save her child, and the idea came from Aunt Lydia (Ann Dowd) and Aunt Vidala (Mabel Li) after Agnes urged them to help save Becka. Becka’s mother was executed by Gilead, and Garth helped Becka by marrying her regardless of her fall from grace. This marriage was also the result of Agnes’ urging. Her determination to make sure Becka was killed was stronger than her desire to marry Garth herself. Her commander fiancé helped as well, but called off their engagement, sending Agnes back into school, heading into The Testaments Season 2.

Becka and Garth’s wedding was intercut with scenes from the execution of Becka’s mother. Conforti tells TV Insider that Becka felt like she was metaphorically walking to her death at her wedding, but that she was shocked to learn that she might have a friend and ally in Garth. Becka drunkenly admitted to Daisy (Lucy Halliday) that she was in love with Agnes earlier this season. Should she reveal her queerness in Gilead, she would be executed for being a “gender traitor.” Despite the risk, and because of her trust in Agnes, Becka kissed Agnes in a private moment before she walked down the aisle to marry Garth.

You can see in Conforti and Infiniti’s performances that the kiss means different things to each character. Conforti defines both perspectives and the layers to them for us.

“Ugh, that kiss. We talked about that kiss with our director, Mike Barker, and [executive producer/creator] Bruce Miller, too,” she says. “We wanted that to be very well done. That was a very big moment, especially for Becka’s feelings and the way that Agnes would then be dealing with acknowledging and supporting her in that moment.”

“For Becka, we originally discussed how Becka would initiate going first for the kiss, and then Agnes would understand where she’s coming from and meet her halfway as an act of, ‘I support you, I’m here for you, I accept you, and I love you,’” Conforti explains. “But once that kiss happens, Becka is the first to pull away as an act of saying, ‘Thank you for being my friend.’ The kiss is more so a way of concluding their friendship and what they have had together in their relationship. Obviously, Becka would want so much more of a life with Agnes, but this is the closest that she’ll ever get, and Agnes is aware of that, too, and doesn’t play into the fantasy that Becka wants, but is giving her the opportunity that she has so [desired].”

Conforti says that Agnes never realized that Becka had feelings for her until the kiss.

“Agnes always knew that Becka and her had a very special connection,” Conforti says. “I don’t think she was ever aware Becka was romantically attracted to Agnes in any way. I think that she just knew that they were best friends and they had a connection that was stronger than anyone else’s friendship connection. So, in the moment of the wedding, when Becka says the line, ‘I know, because you’re here,’ she’s aware and she has this aha moment.”

Becka loves Agnes, but does that mean she only has romantic feelings for women? Conforti says they never made that decision about Becka’s sexuality during filming of Season 1. What they do know is that Becka has never romantically loved anyone but Agnes in her life so far.

“We had this conversation with our showrunner, Bruce Miller,” she says. “Becka, she’s always had feelings for Agnes since day one, Episode 1. She’s had so much love for her in a romantic way, but also in a platonic way, too. She’s her best friend at the end of the day. It’s like when you’re younger and you have this crazy spark and this crazy chemistry with someone, you never want to let them out of your sight. You always want to be with them and you want to create more memories with them. In a world where they’re told that can’t happen, it’s like we need to cling on to whatever we have right now and make those moments last. But for Becka, she’s always been attracted to Agnes and has always wanted Agnes to be in her life.”
