The women of Gilead have always been forced to survive by playing dangerous games — but fans now believe one seemingly quiet figure may secretly be playing the biggest game of all.

Following the latest explosive episodes of The Testaments, viewers are becoming increasingly convinced that Paula could actually be working for the underground resistance network known as Mayday — and that her encouragement of Garth’s political rise may have had nothing to do with ambition… and everything to do with Agnes.

The theory exploded across Reddit, TikTok and X this week after eagle-eyed fans began connecting what they called a “disturbingly calculated” pattern of behaviour.

One viral Reddit post bluntly asked: “Do we think Paula is actually Mayday? And pushing Garth to be Commander to get him and Agnes together?!”

Within hours, hundreds of fans piled into the comments.

And many think the clues are impossible to ignore.

Throughout the season, Paula has repeatedly encouraged Garth toward greater influence inside Gilead’s brutal power structure — despite the obvious danger and corruption surrounding the role of Commander.

But viewers now believe there may have been a hidden motive behind her actions.

According to the theory, Paula may have intentionally manoeuvred Garth into a higher-ranking position because it would place him within Agnes’ orbit — potentially giving Mayday access to critical intelligence or even setting up a future extraction.

Fans pointed to several “oddly emotional” scenes between Paula and Agnes, including lingering glances, protective comments and moments where Paula appeared unusually invested in Agnes’ future.

One fan wrote online: “She’s either secretly Mayday or the writers are deliberately baiting us. There’s no way all those scenes mean nothing.”

Another added: “Paula keeps pushing Garth forward even when everyone else hesitates. It feels strategic, not emotional.”

The speculation comes as The Testaments continues to lean heavily into the shadowy mythology of Mayday — the resistance movement first introduced in The Handmaid’s Tale and expanded in The Testaments.

In recent episodes, viewers have watched Gilead’s carefully controlled façade begin to fracture as spies, secret alliances and hidden loyalties emerge across nearly every level of society.

And fans are increasingly convinced nobody can be trusted.

The latest theory also taps into one of the franchise’s biggest recurring themes: women surviving authoritarian systems by hiding their true intentions behind obedience, manipulation and carefully constructed public roles.

Several viewers even compared Paula’s possible deception to earlier twists involving covert resistance members in The Handmaid’s Tale.

Social media reaction has been feverish.

TikTok edits analysing Paula’s facial expressions have already racked up thousands of views, while X users have dissected screenshots from key scenes looking for visual clues hidden in the background.

Others, however, remain sceptical.

Some fans argue Paula’s behaviour could simply reflect genuine concern for Garth and Agnes rather than a larger resistance operation.

“People are overthinking this,” one viewer wrote. “Not every complicated woman in Gilead is secretly Mayday.”

Still, the theory has gained enough momentum that many viewers now say they are watching every Paula scene differently.

And with the season barreling toward its finale, fans fear the truth — whatever it is — could end in betrayal, heartbreak or even death.

Because in Gilead, nobody survives long without secrets.
