Sam Heughan and Ewan McGregor are joining forces for a legendary “Final Stand”

‘Hopes’ for Sam Heughan and Ewan McGregor to star in Pitlochry show

Alan Cumming has hinted that Sam Heughan and Ewan McGregor could perform in a future production at Pitlochry Festival Theatre.

Mr Cumming, artistic director at Pitlochry, made the remarks after it was announced the two actors would head to the town this summer for “in conversation” events as part of the theatre’s 75th anniversary fundraising appeal.

Mr Cumming said: “I’m so excited and grateful that Sam and Ewan are both coming to support the work of this new era at Pitlochry Festival Theatre, and I hope they will return again soon to actually take part in one of the productions here, as their in conversation evenings play such a vital role in supporting the theatre.”

Pitlochry has hosted a number of big name stars since Mr Cumming took over as artistic director last year – including Lord of the Rings actor Ian McKellen, who took part in a special reading of Equinox, a new play by Laurie Slade, in January as part of the theatre’s inaugural Out in the Hills Festival.

Mr Cumming will be in conversation with Sam Heughan, best known for playing Jamie Fraser in the hit series Outlander, on Sunday 26 July.

Mr Heughan, who graduated from Glasgow’s Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, will discuss his career from his Scottish roots to global success, “celebrating the passion, resilience and ambition” that have defined his career.

Mr Heughan is to reflect on the milestones, creative risks and defining moments that have shaped his path, as well as the projects and ideas that continue to drive him forward.

The Pitlochry Festival Theatre Young Company is to open the evening with a short extract of one of their recent performances for the actor, who is patron of Youth Theatre Arts Scotland.

Meanwhile, on Wednesday 29 July, Traitors US host Mr Cumming will then sit down with Mr McGregor as he reflects on his stratospheric career, from his breakthrough role as Renton in the film adaptation of Trainspotting to international stardom in films such as Star Wars, Moulin Rouge and Black Hawk Down.

The conversation will include behind-the-scenes anecdotes and insights into the acting techniques that have defined his work as well as offering insights into his career, influences, and life in the spotlight for the last three decades.

Mr McGregor said: “I’m very excited to be taking the drive up to Pitlochry soon to have a chat with my old pal Alan Cumming. Alan and I have bumped into each other on and off screen, at film festivals and theatre foyers for the length of our careers and it’s going to be so fun to chat with him on stage at Pitlochry to raise funds for this wonderful theatre.”

To mark its 75th anniversary, the theatre is looking to raise £500,000 by the end of 2026 as well as doubling its number of patrons and members during this period.

Pitlochry Festival Theatre is set to launch its 75th anniversary season and Mr Cumming’s first as artistic director in May, with the Scottish premiere of the Tony and Olivier award-winning musical Once, reuniting the original creative team behind the Broadway and West End musical.

Announcing his first full season at the helm of the theatre earlier this year, Mr Cumming said he would scrap the theatre’s historic repertory structure. He said he wanted instead to “invite people that I knew and loved or admired to come to Pitlochry and start this adventure with me”.
