  • Morgan Spector wasn’t worried about George Russell’s future on The Gilded Age
  • “Fortunately, I had the next episode, so I didn’t think that it was over for me,” Spector told PEOPLE on the red carpet for The Gilded Age’s Television Academy for Your Consideration Event
  • ‘The Gilded Age’ star also shared that he thinks there’s hope for George and Bertha Russell

The Gilded Age’s Morgan Spector wasn’t worried about the fate of his character, George, when he was shot in season 3.

Speaking to PEOPLE on the red carpet for The Gilded Age’s Television Academy for Your Consideration Event on Tuesday, Nov. 18, Spector, 45, revealed he was actually excited about the surprising turn in his character’s storyline.

“Fortunately, I had the next episode, so I didn’t think that it was over for me,” Spector explains. “Also, when I’ve died on shows before, typically the writer will call you and be like, ‘Hey, you know, we liked you. We’re not killing you off because we think you suck. Like we just [think] this is where the story needed to go.’”

“I didn’t get that call from Julian [Fellowes], so I wasn’t worried in that way, but I was excited… It felt like a daring turn for our story, which I was excited about,” he adds.

The star shared that he enjoys keeping fans of the show on their toes.

“[The show] starts to feel familiar. The audience starts to feel comfortable, and so the move we have is to constantly be upending their expectations in order to keep the show fresh and enjoyable,” he says.

As for season 4 of The Gilded Age, Spector says he hasn’t “seen scripts or heard anything” about what’s to come just yet. That means he’s still in the dark about what’s next for George and Bertha’s love story after their emotional separation in season 3. Despite this, he said he thinks there’s hope for the “profoundly erotic relationship.”

“I’m hopeful that we sort of see them work their way back together, but I don’t know, it’s not my call,” he adds.

Carrie Coon, who plays Bertha, also spoke to PEOPLE, and she shared her thoughts on the couple’s future as well.

“Bertha says she knows what she wants and what she wants is George back, and so I have to bet on Bertha that she’s gonna get George back,” Coon, 44, tells PEOPLE.

Coon also said she credits the pair’s respect for one another for making them so popular among their fans. “I think respect is really sexy in a time where there isn’t much,” Coon says.
