‘They Let Loose’: Outlander Writer Breaks Down Sam Heughan and Caitríona Balfe’s Raw Fight Scene

Outlander’s executive producer Ronald D. Moore has opened up about a huge moment, where Jamie (played by Sam Heughan) and Claire Fraser (Caitriona Balfe) really lashed out at each other.

The couple were at odds in season two after Claire forced Jamie to promise he wouldn’t duel with Captain ‘Black Jack’ Randall (Tobias Menzies) because his death would mean her first husband Frank Randall (also Menzies) would never exist.

The scene in question saw Jamie and Claire getting into a heated row after the Highlander learnt his foe was alive.

Speaking about the moment previously on the official Outlander podcast, Moore said: “This scene is drawn from the book. We really tried to use as much of the dialogue of this fight as we possibly could.

“It’s a great performance. There’s just something really amazing and we really let [Balfe] and [Heughan] go at it in the scenes. When you unleash them, they really dig down deep.

“I remember the fight that they had in 109 in the first season and then this fight.”

He went on to say: “When they’re really emotional and they’re really heartfelt and they really passionately believe in their positions, these two actors can really take you places.”

Moore continued: “They’re so mature, they understand their relationship and they’ve work together for a couple of years.”

Outlander costume designer Terry Dresbach, who also appeared on the podcast, said: “And they know each other so well by now.”

She added: “And you can see they have really become these characters and they inhabit them in such a deep and believable way. It’s quite amazing.”

The scene in question would come back to haunt the Frasers later on, when Jamie and Black Jack ended up in an illegal duel.

The duel ended in tragedy for Claire after she started to miscarry after turning up as the duel was taking place.

Claire would be left fighting for her life and losing her daughter Faith, who was stillborn.

She would also have to get a pardon for her husband for his illegal behaviour, which would cost her more than she was expecting.

Later, Claire learnt Jamie had sought to kill the sadistic Redcoat after he raped Fergus Fraser (Romann Berrux), resulting in her husband breaking his word to her.
