The complete first season of Meghan Markle’s new series, With Love, Meghan is now streaming on Netflix. The show is a hybrid of the programs you’d find on HGTV and The Food Network—and it’s clear that Markle is eager to get back to her lifestyle blogging roots, posting on her site The Tig in between takes of shooting the show Suits. From its opening scene, in which Markle and a beekeeper collect honey, the Duchess of Sussex appears totally in her element as she cooks, gardens, and entertains celebrity guests for the camera.

The series wasn’t filmed in Markle’s actual home, which some may say gives the show an air of inauthenticity. However, the Independent UK reports the series was filmed in a rental nearby to protect her children’s privacy. Nonetheless, the show’s Pinterest-esque vibe will either feel enjoyable for its calming escapism or a little blah (don’t expect any royal gossip or bombshell confessions here!). Although, we have to admit that there were some pretty good entertaining tips sprinkled throughout the eight-episode series. Among the recipes Markle cooks up, the celeb cameo conversations, and helpful how-tos, we gathered nine takeaways from With Love, Meghan that’ll hopefully get you in the mood for your upcoming springtime soirées.

1. Infuse your guests’ favorite things into the details.

In each episode of With Love, Meghan, Markle personalizes the experience to her guest’s tastes and interests. For example, Markle teaches Mindy Kaling, a mother of three, how to plan an elevated children’s birthday party. When Argentine photographer, Delfina Blaquier joins Markle for an afternoon hike and an extravagant picnic, Markle makes sun tea bags for her, bakes dog treats for Blaquier’s pup, and fruit preserves for her family. She also whips up some homemade creamer for Vicky Tsai, who loves her coffee sweetened. Taking note of what your guests’ favorite things are and making an effort to “match what [they] enjoy,” is an act of love.

2. Seeing the process makes you appreciate the finished product more.

Whether it’s harvesting honey or preparing a big meal, Markle advocates for doing things that scare you a little bit. “I used to be scared of roasting a chicken. I thought, there’s no way I’ll ever get it right,” she says in response to Blaquier’s hesitation to bake bread. “And then you do it, and you go okay, it’s not going to be raw, it’s not going to be overcooked, and you figure it out. Bread? Same thing.”

It isn’t the finished product that makes the endeavor worth it, but the journey it takes to get from point A (scared) to point B (accomplished). “The idea of what you can do at home, that you still have your hands in, that you’re part of creating,” Markle continues. “What’s the thing that you can do, even in a small amount, that you can go, no, I made that. What can you make and it feels good?” If you never try, you’ll never know.

3. The guest experience should start young.

In addition to paying close attention to what the adults in her life love and appreciate, Markle is also highly aware of what her children enjoy. Because of this, she goes the extra mile to make sure the littles in her life are allotted their own luxuries. This could look like a garden-themed birthday party complete with cut-out shape sandwiches, edible flower sprinkles, fruit salad arranged like a rainbow, and themed goodie bags—anything that feels memorable and stokes their imaginations.

4. You deserve the guest experience, too.

Author and podcaster Brené Brown once said, “Talk to yourself like you would to someone you love.” Markle shares the sentiment, but the Duchess insists you should also treat yourself like you would someone you love.

“It’s nice to have a guest experience for yourself,” Markle tells the camera as she makes lavender towels for herself and Blaquier to enjoy post-hike. “A hotel experience at home.”

5. You can remix things to suit your style.

In episode six, titled, “The Juice is Worth the Squeeze,” Markle takes bouquets she bought from the grocery store and deconstructs them, mixing and matching the flowers to create arrangements that speak to her taste and aesthetic.

“Yeah, you can get a bouquet at the grocery store, and they’re premade, but you don’t need to feel like you have to get home and put that arrangement in a vase as-is,” she explains. “That’s how someone did it; that’s not how you have to do it. But what’s within that pre-made set still has the potential to be something a little more elevated. So, let’s reconstruct it and reinvent it.”

This logic doesn’t just apply to flowers, either. You can reupholster furniture. You can buy a black desk and paint it neon green. Personalization isn’t exclusive to things you make from scratch.

6. You can create luxury experiences on a budget.

A message that Markle repeats throughout her show is that you can take something simple and elevate it. You don’t have to spend hundreds of dollars for the experience of a dinner party to feel special. Perspective, imagination, and creative license are key: You can get grocery store bouquets and rearrange them to your liking, head to a thrift store for bargain decor and paint the hardware, and shop at farmer’s markets or places like Trader Joe’s, Aldi, and Lidl for affordable groceries.

7. Prepping ahead makes all the difference.

There were many instances throughout the series that Markle had either meal-prepped or gathered crafting materials either the night before or the morning of her guests’ arrival. This not only streamlined the experience but ensured that their time together was well spent—not wasted on tedious tasks.

8. Flowers make everything better.

There wasn’t a single episode of With Love, Meghan that didn’t involve Markle either decorating or garnishing with flowers. From simple bouquets to wild arrangements for centerpieces, edible flower sprinkles on donuts and in salads, or frozen in ice cubes, the mom of two makes a compelling argument for why florals in some capacity are a must for all occasions.

9. Learning and creating with loved ones strengthens your bond.

As much as this show is a guide to being the hostess with the most, it’s also about friendship and making memories with the ones you love. Markle stresses the importance of reaching out to those you can learn from. In trying something new together and relying on one another’s skills to complete a task or create something, Markle says, “your learning becomes the background of the expansion of friendship.”
